WHATS HAPPENING We never nieunt Memorial Day lo be a ilay of hi-jiiiks, car crashes, death and 4ragcdy. That’s not wliat the Grand Army of the Republic jdanned when it observed Memorial Day for tlie first lime day 30. 1868. The auto then was a jdream like planes and space frights. We waved the flag proudly, not cynically. We drank lemon ade and cold well waters We traveled by train, wagon and horseback. We got where we wanted to go and we got back safely. And the wonder is that there was lime for it all! MemorioLDay was a holiday, a day of rest and a day of peace. It ^as a day w<? honored our dead and spoke proudly of pur traditions. Since then we’ve become a society on wheels.
