Prari^bin, who was appointed as th« new Ptlncipal of John ■. \V. Dodd Junior High School, is no stranger in Freeport. He was gradu- cted from Freeport High School In 1929. He received ftis Bachelor of Arts degree from Westminister College ‘in Pennsylvania in 1935. In college he was captain of the football team ‘ in his senior year and was also ac - i — -— ' . .tlve In basketball a n d track. ‘ Bis college talents were not only ,iiT the athletic field but'also in music and dmma. He toured with the famous Westminster Choir and was very active in the dramatic prc- ' ■ grams of the college. Mr. IVanklln took special ccursM in Guidance -subjects at Wisconsin j University and received his Master’s degree from New York University In 1942. He married the foi-mer Geraldine Konz while he was a student at Wisconsin University. They have ten children. The three oldest arc ■ a^l graduates of Freeport High School and now attend college. They have six children presently tn various grades in the Freeport School system. “Big Lou” Franklin Is well-liked and highly respected by students, Itarente and faculty membera alike. The survey showe dthat 69 per cent ■ cf • the smokers began despite the fact that'they were refused 'par ental permission, while only 8 per cent of th® non-smokers cited pav- ;ental disapproval as a reason for not smoking. The smokers also re- Piorted that 70 per cent of tnem were able to win parental permission a year-or more after they began smok ing regularly. The American Cancer Society has launched A broad program of can cer education regarding smoking and lung cancer, using its sound film strip “To 'Smoke or Not to Smoke.’* 23.000 Nasau students have viewed the film to date. -Emphasis is placed on presenting the facts about smoking with the slogan “Teach aiid Not Pceach.\ The film Is available free of charge for youth and adult groups by calling the A.O.S. a t PI 6*7830. The facts on the relationship of cigarette smoking to lung cancer were estafall^ed by tt)e American Cancer Society’s pioneer smoking study, among others, which covered 185,000 adults. To date the Society has spent over $1,000,000 on lung cancer research which was contributed through the April Cancer Crusade.
