. ... \7 IPAGE IIG H I T H E L E A H E R THTJRSDAT, MARCH 30, 1961 THUI TO THE RESIDENrS OF T As the owner of the parcel of land which lies south of the Village line of Free'port, known as \Cow Meadow,\ I have once again filed with the Town Board of Hempstead a new application to rezone the property. Because of the many misconceptions that usually arise, predicated upon erroneous rumors and unfounded facts, I am taking this means of pre senting to you the true picture in this matter. The previous application to rezone was denied in January of this year. This time, I am requesting that the area be rezoned so as to permit the erection of single family dwellings. Thirty-one (31) years ago, the Town of Hempstead adopted its first Zoning Map. At that time, the land was placed in an industrial zone. At that time, the entire County of Hassau had a population of 303,053. In 1960, this has been increased to 1,300,171. During these thirty-one long years, along with the population explosion, an industrial explosion took place. Lacge air factories were built (Grumman and Republic); the electronic industry was founded and expanded (Sperry and Arma); m y riad other' indu^tt'ial centers grew up (Roosevelt Field and, Stewart Avenue). Yet in that period of thirty-one years, not one building for industrial use or any other use, was erected on \Cow Meadow.\ In the meanwhile, however, all of the lands surrounding \Cow Meadow\ have been developed and used for residential purposes, and at the present time, \Cow Meadow\ is completely surrounded by one-family homes and the Meadowbrook Parkway. It is bounded on three sides.by water; namely, Hudson Bay, Freeport Creek and the Narrows, and has only one means of access; namely. South Main Street, which crosses through what is now a newly devel oped fine densely populated residen''ial area. Despite the fact that the land lies fallow and barren, the taxes last year were increased from S6,100.00 to $15,000.00. Yet not one facility of the Town, Village or School District was used by the owner. I can oniy ask you as fair-minded individuals, what you would do if you were in my position. — My position is not complex. I believe it to be a fair and equitable one. I want the right to develop this land along the only way common sense dictates is possible, and to do it In the only way to help and benefit the neighbors and people of Freeport.
