Death claimed 2.08S persons on the state’s highways, compared with 2,286 the previous year. Edward Levin To Be Heard On W HU Feb. 12 Announce Plans for Local YM & YWCA Formation of the South Shore YM . A Y.W.HA. to serve Jewish resident* of Baldwin. Freeport, Roosevelt and Merrick has bew an nounced by the New York Metro politan Section of the National Jew ish Welfare Board (JWB). JWB is the national association of Jewish Community Centers and YM- The South Shore Y.M. & Y.W.HA. is the third in Nassau County. The others are the Mid-lfiland YM- YWHA and the Central Nassau YM-YWHA. Richard Hoffman, 32 Nancy Boulevard. Merrick, is serving as acting president of the new YM- YWHA. Plans have been made to incorporate end to launch a mem bership campaign. The first two projects to be undertaken will be a cultural and recreation progrram for senior-age high school students and a summer day camp. ______ _ ______ David M. Althought I intend to 'write an extensive article on the Varsity Show at a later date, I would like to Just mention a few specifics about It. The Reverend Mr. Edward Levin, pastor of the Church of Nai^rene in Freeport, wil deliver the spiritual message on the \Lift Up Thy Voice\ program presented by Radio Station WHIil, Hempstead, at 7:35 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 12. The Director of the \Highlight Zone\ which will be presented Wednesday afternoon, MarchB; Friday night, March 10 and Satur day night, March 11, is Ed Kennedy. Under him are Paul Godt, Comedy director; Pat Corrigan. Novelty di rector; Joan Verona, Choreography director; Bob Stekler, Music direc tor: and Jim King, Business Man ager. Last week the following were chosen as M.C.’s: Ricky Bean, Pat Regan, Mary PIshel, Pam Sullivan, and Cliff Schorer. Tryouts for acts in the show began early Wednes day night. Last year nmrked the formation of a team to compete in brains in stead of brawn. Under the super vision of Mr. John Major Freeport HlghSchool organized a Math Team to comjiete with 47 other schools In the Nassau County Inter-Schol- astlc Math League. As a rookie team last year, the Freeport Mathletes U n ited their neor the bottom. However, this year they have started to shape up and are presently among the top third of the 48 schools. Five mathematical questions are asked at each of the five league matches with every team having five of its members sit in on each question. With a point given for each correct answer it is theoretic ally possible (though never done) for a team to score 25 pqmts a match and finish the season with a perfect record of 125 points. Com prising the team this yeEir are Mike Bemateln Lawrence Mlntz, Duncan Cooper, Barbara Baehr, Don Gold smith, Bob Lang, Don Griffiths, Mel Niertnan, Bill Rubin, and Paul Paul Baker currently ranks among the top ten mathletes of Nassau County. Paul, an Honor Society member, is In the top 5% of the Senior Class with a 92% average. Besides other organizations, he also -belODgs-to-Science)-ChesS|-and-the. newly formed Radio Clubs and the Concert Euid Marching Band of Freeport High. Since his interests lie in the field of electronics, math, and science. Paul plans to major In Physics for the next four years at Drexel institute of Technology in Philadelphia. “Lift Up Thy Voice” Is presented by WHLI in cooperation with the Nassau Evangelical Minister's Fel lowship of Long island.
