' representing the seniors, won \ the annual prize speaking contest for PJ-eeport High School students,-sponsored by Wil liam Clinton Story Post. American Legion, in the school auditorium on Wednesday night, February 13. Using -the topic. “Take Sides for Freedom,'’-she defeated Linda the junior repre-sentatlve, whose title was “Oheew -for the Living/Tears for the Dead.\ Ln the ninth and tenth grade competition, Busan Sullivan, of the lower class, reciting “This He Be lieves/' triumphed over Robert Vogel, Uie elder competitor, whose topic was \Makers of the Flag.” Caroline McIntyre, of the sevenDt grade, was the other winner, de feating Sally McIntyre, her sister, the eighth grpder. Their numbers were \Th© Common Man” arid “The Vision of Peace,” respectively. Dr. John W. Dodd, superintend ent of schools and chairman of the Legion’^/.Americanism ■ . brought greetings, as did John R. Rlszottl, the Legion commander.. The Ninth grade Chorus sang three numbers, “America, My Own.” “Bo’s I Can Write My N-ame\ and \Mary Had a Little Lamb.\ under the direction of Miss Miriam Roberts. The high school band, di rected by Dr? J. Maynai-d Wett- lauf^, also played. However, the musical treat of the evening was the playing of the Post’s Drum and Bugle Corp.s, which gave “To the Colors,\ to get the p r o g r ^ tmder way, and lat-er put on ah. e^ibitlon ..wit^i “Tiic Sunrisers,” Sahdy Feldstelh *ddecl to . ^ e evenlne^ enjoyment with a marimba solo. Principal J. \Wesley Southard pi-esented medals to the runners up In the preliminary contests, and Ed ward J . Neary, acting as a judge for his 28th year, announced the winners in the various .competi tions. Other judges were? Leo P. Giblyn, president of the Board of Education, the Rev. Dr. John L. Latshaw, pastor of the Freeport Methodist Church; Past Com mander Kenneth B. Vought and Mrs.'John Nlcolich, pre^dent of the Legion Auxiliary. Henry N.
