1956 THUnSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1956 T H E LEADER PAGE THIRTEEN held sc w. Case Of Two Youths Ends In Compromise Speeding Charge Dropped And Defective Muffler Count Is Suspended The case of the two youtSs charged by officers of the Nassau County Marine Bureau with speed ing and having defective mufflers open following the calling o f r of the Lions' Outboard motor boat race on Sunday, August 26, was settled by a compromise before Judge Widlitz, _ the First District - Court. Mineola, on Tuesday. How ever, the crux of the situation, th&t of the question of the Jurisdiction of the town over the area Involved, was left in the air. The youths involved were Peter Hellsten, 20, 63 West First street, and Douglas Bindrim, 18, of AmltyvlUe. They were arrested a'f- ter the j>oliee ordered the canclla- tion of the meet. Victor H. Leff. who appeared originally for both youths, argued thait the county police had no Jurisdiction as Bald win Harbor Canal off Meister Beach where the incident occurred is within the 1.500 foot area to the Bouth is within the Incorporated limits of the V illas of Freeport. When the ease was started last Fi iday, the entire court session was taken up with the testlmony.wlth two patroin^en of the Marine Bu reau who contended the arreSls ordered by the officers of the pa trol boat on \orders from h l ^ e r up\ were outside the 4,500 foot limit After the session. Editor, The Leader: My sincere thanks to you and the Preeptort Leader for the Hne editorial in the August 23 issue headlined \Facelifting for Preeporf and also the one in the August 30 issue, headlined \Time to ConfJJfer Parking Field Again.\ The former refers to Main street south to At lantic avenue, Merrick road east from Main street to the Village line with the Henry street ex tension from literrlck road to Smith and Main streets, ail to be done by the County, which ha.s been a long time coming, TSUi thanks to the constant vigilance of Mayor Glacken using every effort and opportunity of his relations with our good friends In the Coun ty. pleading for these so urgently needed widenings. they are at last in sight. Also at long last Ehe elimination of our grade crossings is in sight which has been anxiously awaited by air citizens of Freeport, not only for every one’s local convenience of travel in our streets without being held up by trains at cross ings, but as you so readily predict and it verifies my contentions of .en years standing that Freeport is on the verge of substantial grovfth and will regain its place amon^?!>c first In Nassau County as a Busi ness. commercial center and com munity of homes. I am glad of your confidence In Freeport's future. I have always .said \Do not sell Freeport short.\ Preepoi’C may have missed the boat as far as- a department store is concerned, but it is my belief that Freeport will more than make up for it by its diversification in busi- neas. i^ h t maniUactairing,. office facilities,^ apartments' an<f~fine'dhe'-~ family homes, ali depending on one another for employment and fine living In our community where the tax rate can be held Co a minimum because of the above mentioned diversifications, plus the fact Ehat Freeport owns Its own water and electric power and light plans, that •save us well over $100,000 yearly in our Village budget. Your second editorial “Time to Consider Parking Field Again\ is so aptly put- It Is of course, the life blood of any modern com munity and should not be over looked for the welfare of Freeport as a whole and the parking field proposed four years ago, as adopted by the Board, is still of utmost importance to Freeport. Hanse Park bounded by Mill road at Smith street is easily accessible for entrance and exit by the a&dbe mentioned roads, plus the assured extension of Henry street to Hanse Park makes this parking field more attractive for that pmpose tWth, space for parking 1200 cars per day. If will serve a triple advaflvSge to Freeport. il> It will help butld up the Henry and Main streets business area if free shuttle service is provided to and from the field for shoppers. <2) It will help to build up the manufacturing fa€jTi- lies on the Mill road and Merrick roa dareas. (3> I t will add parking facilities for our Stadium and re lease pi?.ate land in that area now used for Stadium parking, il improved with light manufacturing and thereby raise our assessment valuation for tax purposes and thus aid the home owners in Freeport. The Hanse Park field can and will be a self liquidating invest ment by charging just 35 ceints foi' 10 hours and 25 cents for shopper’s unlimited parking up to five hours, including shuttle service from Smith street and from Main street to Newton boulevard and Henry street, thence to Sunrise highway and back to Main street, south to Smith and Main streets at Hanse Park. This plans to my minff'is the only way Freeport can attract both business and industry and most important of all. our stFT^s will not be clogged up by traffic hunting for places to park. w> 4o shopping or park near places of .'employmeut.' I sincerely hope that Hanse Park will soon be a reality for FreSPdrt. 1 am sure that Mayor OUcken and my fellow members on the Board are seriously considering all of the advantages offered by Hanse PaUk for parking purposes to the bene fit of Freeport. I am happy to note Mr. Editor, that you and your paper. T^e Leader, saw fit to print these edi torials without being solicited. I am sure you have performed a good service in the interest of Freeport. CORD VIEBROCK. triistee September 4, 1956 Exchange Club Hears Ground Water Expert Present County Surplus Elndangered By Growth Of Population In Area Nassau County has a margin of about 150 million gallons of water per day above its requirements at the present time, but population increases will probably lyause a serious problem in 40 or 50 years, the Freeport Exchange Club was ^tc^d August 29 at its luncheon in the.Sea Breeze Restaurant. Herman Lauman, associated with C. W. Lauman and Company, Inc., well contracting firm of Bethpage, gave a clear picture of the ground- w a t e r situation. He dlsplsiyed charts which portrayed L o n g Island's geological formation. The upper cgiacial) stratum ab sorbs water very fast. Mr. Lauman said. Just beneath it, a stratum of sands and clays absorbes watei' much more slowly. Freeport's deep wells draw from this level. Nassau has extremely soft water so soft that it is usually hardened by the addition of lime, the speaker revealed. At least half of the rainfall fil ters into the ground. Mr. Lauman gave statistics on Suffolk County, where he said about 900 mUllon gallons per day are wasted. The chief cause of concern on Long Island is that If too much water is dr^wn from upper strata, salt water may come in from, the ocean. TTtat danger, according to the expert, has led to creation of a state water control commission. Mr. Lauman discussed the draw* Ing of -water from Nassau's south shore by New York City. When the city stopped pumping supplies from this system recently, except in emergency sliortagcs, the water level rose so much that many cellars were flooded in the Rook* vllle Centre area. Builders had figured the level of their structures upon conditions which existed when himdreds of thousands of gallons were pumped into the city Nassau has about 250 million gallons available dolly, or some 250 gallons per person. Walter Pope Introduced Mr. Lau* man, whom he coiled an expert on ground-water conditions.
