FYeeport Elks held a Birth day Night last Thursday for the brothers with July .birthdays. Each was officially honored and presented with a gift from tlje lodge. Exalted Ruler Joseph T. O'Connor reported on his trip to the national convention a t Philadelphia. He also stated that Elks Lodges in the -United States expended a total of $6,285,507 on charity during the 1954 Elks’ y e a r .' T h t Exalted Ruler requested the brothers to devote some of their time to work for the Charity Ba zaar Caravan, in order to make this year's bazaar successful. 'He said the August m eetings will be held on the 11th and 25th, with the latter to be \Clam-Diggers Nite.\ Howard Batelnan announced that an Elks’ fishing party would board the \Anne\ docked on Woodeleft avenue, Freeport on August 6 for a day of fishing. After the meeting a collation was served in honor of the “Birthday Brothers.\ They were entertained by Scotty McGregor and his guitar. Basketball Tournament Starts Tuesday Night The Long Island Open Recrea tional Basketball Tournament spon sored by the Freeport Recreation Department got underway with sev eral games at the local parks Tues day night. Three games will be played to night. Hlcksvllle will m eet the Long Beach Photos at Northeast at 8 o’clock, followed by the West Hemp stead Hackers versus the Sacred Heart A.C. at 9 o ’clock. Long Island City wil play the Long Beach A C. at Northwest at 9 o’clock. There are 14 teams in this tourna ment whose players include a num ber of college basketball stars home for their Summer vacations. U p r b a r a S t q w a r t The thing that makes Zippy so unlike other chimps is not only his high degree of intelligence but also his acts, which do not consist of the ordinary \monkey-shines ’ The Ec uyers have taught Zip to do almost everything a child can do. He walks on two feet, eats politely at the table with the rest of the family, swings on a swing, skates expertly, plays tag. and cun be taught to do almost anything with a few days notice. However. Zippy’s fine upbringing doesn’t keep things from poppin? whenever the young chimp is around. Once, while rehearsing for Ed Sullivan’s ‘Toast jof the Town. Zippy fell in love with Ray Bloch, the orchestra leader. When per formance time rolled \round. Zip went into his act; then, right in the ! middle of Ills dancing and without j warning, the impulsive chimp took I off with one leap and landed smack 1 dab in the middle of the orchestra leader's arms. Although Zippy may do some un expected things at times, he usually comes through with what his act the others in the ’tournament are\ calls for. Among the many features of Zip’s night club act is a bit where he picks a girl (usually a pretty one) from the audience and has a game of tag with her. When Zippy's not working, his home life is by no means dull; the active chimp amuses himself, as would any child, with many dift ferent activities. When he’s not getting into the ink or medicine cabinet or pushing Parker \21 pens into the floor, he plays with his toys, has fun in the back yard, splashes in water, or. best of all. watches television, especially the fast-moving, exciting westerns. Some people might thank that a | chimp would have trouble making himself understood - but not Zip; he s got a different sound for every important idea like \Tin hungry” or \ I want to go to bed.” (He sleeps I from twelve to fourteen hours each night and eats more than the ave rage human.)
