HODGES, E d itor G eorge W. G o eller, Associate E d itor 'Desert Song\ Coming Up II is hardly necessary for The Leader U> remind its readers that Freeport’s big musical event of flic year, the annual production of the Freeport Community Choral, is scheduled to be given at the high school auditorium Thurs day*, Friday and Saturday nights, October 21, 22 and 23. The Freeport Community. Choral has earned an enyiable position among Long Island musical organizations and top ‘listing among Freeport civie groups by its record extending ' iback over a decade.-tinder the leadership of Director Hubert 3‘. Tavisj J r , assisted by a loyal group of talented musicians -and an enthusiastic group with varying skills who handle publicity, scenery and shift the props, the Community Choral annuaHy gives Freeport and environs a real Treat. The Choral is giving “The Desert Song” this year. This is probably its most pretentious production but we know the cast will take it in its stride, giving us some good music, some beautiful scenery 'and some good laughs with a show that- made history on Broadway years ago with the tinest actors .of that time. If there are Freeport residents who do not attend these events every year we suggest they fall in line and get a ticket for ohe of the three nights next week. We know they will go away with pleasant memories of a delightful evening and the happy thought that they have supported an. outstanding community project. When this writer went to the show last year he did not have much time to say hello to Freeport people because we run into some old friends from Rockville Centre and Lyn- :brpok-,wha say they never miss one of the Choral's produc tions. They pointed out that some residents, of .those two villages were in the cast. This reflects the stature of the Choral among music lovers all over the South Shore. It has become more than u Freeport amateur theatrical organiza tion. The Leader hopes there will not he any vacant seats at any of next week’s performances. Support is needed to fi nance these productions, whose cost runs into thousands of dollars, and they are too good as entertainment to play to a single empty chair. During the last 25 years the early planting on the campus has matured, giving Adelphi a campus with' lovely trees and a real college atmosphere of dignity and beauty. :VV The numng spirit at Adelphi since 1038 has been Presi dent Paul Dawson Eddy, whose popularity with the people of Long Island has contributed, ini measurably; to. making the college .a port of the Icommunity. Dr. Eddy had the rare experience of having the college foreclosed on him, or thrown into bankruptcy, during the depression. Undaunted lie en listed the support of able Nassau leaders and-went ahead, cveiilually paying-otf the debt while the college grew steadily iii enrollment and in stature among the educational insti- iiinn'k of the 1 State and Nation.
