The powerful plvotman la In hia fourth season of varsity competition and it is hoped that he will reach the stardom that has been predicted for him. Dave Jones, a first team operator laat season, finds himself strug- gling <to retain this berth. Jones, possessor of a smooth one-hand shot, is competing with a pair of last year's reserves for the remaining start\ ing posts. John Morgan, a slxnthree rebound specialist, and Joe Anitros, an aggressive ball hawk, are hustling into contention for a first string position. Also expected to see considerable notion are Hugh Zrwln and Al Soopinich, a paJir of slxnthree operators up from the junior varsity. Char- lie Ondordonk, a steady left-handed performer from last season's re- serves, should see considerable action. The remaining berths have been filled by Howie Waszmer, Emll Lauck, George Dragonetti, Phil Roberts, Bert Campbell, Bart Sheard and Gene Carlisle. All performed for last year's jayvee except Waazmer l,who was a varsity, reserve. Other leading contenders for the 8J3.A.L. crown are Bewanhaka, Baldwin and Mepham. SeWanhaka, winner of Section One last year, has Ohris Harris, a deadly set shot; Vinnie Kelly, a owlCt playmaker; Al Pugliese, a flashy ballhandler; Bob Donlon, six-four pivotman and Ron Comite, six-two irebbunder; for their starting five. Baldwin has a pair of junior aces 4n shifty Denny Miller end power- ful Bill O'Brien, Charlie Shaw and possibly Ed O'Rourke are also num- bered under returning veterans. Mepham has one of tihe tallest schol- astic arrays seen in many years. Their giants include six-six Don Nelson, six-four Vetter, and six-four Burkhard. Among the mldgeta on tlie squad are six-one Ed Nlckla, six-one Bob Meyer and a pair of six-footers, Greg Maushant and Sal DIPazlo. Long Beach's hoopsters, under the tutelage of former North Carolina star Bob Gersteln, are paced by two veteran luniors. lAttle Tommy Dc- Luca, an all- scholastic pick laat year and now in his third varsity cam- - — — , ^,__ *i— *.._*_ ** »#,,» ?»%», teams up wlith deadeye Harry Sachs, a six-*Mve junior, to give *the Beachers a oevastatlng one*tiwo attack. \\ 1 *MTWTW, ^M* WMV, **M*^t M 14t,t We ran a little bad luck last week as the Rutgera-Colgatq game waa cancelled due to the weather, 1%la was the game that was to be viewed by the winner of our football contest.
