The purpose of the NEPH Week is to stimulate the employment of phy- sically handicapped, many of whom are veterans, in all fields of en- deavor. Wartime statistics , relative to disabled workers revealed that \they had a much smaller labor turnover, less absenteeism, fewer accidents and equal or higher pro- c'ucuon rates than normal work- ers. Since the war ended, veterans have been trained to overcomr ,ervice disabilities. Y., dot. 16—Publica- tion of \New York Means Business in the Metropolitan Area,\ a 68- page book of business data on the world's greatest financial, manu- facturing and commercial region, was announced this week by the New York State Department of Commerce. Illustrated with maps and charts, the book is designed to serve as a guide to those interested, in the New York metropolitan area in planning or expanding business en- terprises. Included with New York City are the neighboring counties of Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester and Rockland, an area with a popula- tion of 9,063,843 or about 6 per cent of the total for the United States. The volume contains detailed analyses of population, employ- ment, purchasing power, manufac- turing, wholesale and retail busi- ness, service establishments, in- come, living standards, finance, transportation and .other factors of the area's business structure. It is the llth in a series of publica- tions, covering the major economic areas in the State, prepared by the Commerce Department in its pro- gram to encourage the development and expansion of business activity. One of the book's features is a master table of selected statistics arranged by boroughs and commu- nities, analyzing the area as a pro- ducing, marketing, distributing and servicing center. The table pro- vides a breakdown of purchasing power, housing, employment by oc- cupations and sex, and other data. Christie, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Christie, Brook- side ave., Roosevelt, began his studies for the degree of Doctor of Medicine at the Long ( Island Col- lege of Medicine, when the college opened its 87th year. Mr. Christie prepared for medical school at Nor- wich University and served with the U. S. John White, jr., son of Mf. and Mrs. John White. Freeport, N. Y., has completed a 13-week course in Army basic training at the Ninth Infantry Division training center, Fort Dix, and will leave soon for a new assignment at Fort Meade. Md. Prior to his enlistment on June 11. Pvt. White attended Freeport High School.
