BENNETT \COSMETICS\ Che#s Corner The recent death of Emanuel Laskar deprived the . chess world not only of one of Its greatest mas- ters but of its greatest psychologist. Even though his technical and theorttlcal abilities were superb\ his most original contribution to chess was .psychological play. It is easily understood that Uie tremendous refinement of chess technlc leads to a vast number of drawn games. When two masters, whose play is the result of far- reaching analysis meet, the game is won eventually by an error on one side. It Is a contest of nerves rather than true skill, Laakar realized this vagary of the game and set himself.to fight his opponent not only physically but mentclly. He played theoretically unsound chess, placed obstacles in the path of,his\6pponent that were confusing and destructive to any recognized line:of play; ^As one man once reported, \He Is not so much- interested in making the objectively best-moves as he Is in making those most disagreeable to his opponent. Playing wlth\an uhsoundhess that In itself was an art, he maneuvered Uie game until both his opponent and himself were tottering on the brink of disaster. Then, with shock- ing suddenness, Laskar's play would become magnificent, his strategy and tactics overwhemlngly sound. Hla unnevered opponent, facing strange and bewildering situations, unable to cope with the shattering perfection of Laskar's play, soon collapsed in complete demoraliza- tion; ' •'•• -• --•'- . ' ' Through this recognition of (he mental aide of chess Laskar was able to gain victories in matches that otherwise might have ended In draws. ' This ability Is probably the reason that Laskar, aocdrmng to the rec- ords of international tournaments, was the world's most successful player. . In t*ia three most notable matches with, Stelnltz (4894), . Marshall '(1907), and Tarrasch (1908) he had a total of sixteen drawn games. It la. noi .lasoiBiRoji.. jg-find. that, ma In a single match. For instance, in 1927 Alekhlne won tht world's championship from ^Capablanca with six wins, three losses and twenty-five drawn games.
