Robert J. Starrett, who has edited The Post since 1969, will be the new publisher. Baptists Present Christmas Cantata Robert J. Starrett - New Post Publisher Approximately 50 Farmingdale residents appeared Monday night for the public heating on proposed zoning law changes for shopping centers being con- ducted by the Farmingdale Board of Village Trustees. The changes amend local laws to require a special use permit to be granted by the trustees for any planned shop- ping centers in the Village of Farmingdale. The new law also spells out what constitutes a \planned shopping center\ and sets construction limits, setback minimums and parking requirements. Village attorney Joseph Stern pointed out that under the present zoning laws for a Business D district, a contractor need only apply for a building permit if the Christmas Pageant The Farmingdale United Methodist Church, Main Street and Grant Avenue, will be presenting an outdoor Christmas Pageant, entitled \The Coming of Christ in Living Pictures.\ The Pageant will be performed on Sunday, December 18, Wed- nesday, December 21, Friday, December 23. All performances will begin at 7 p.m. There will be a full music program by the combined choirs of the church. The theft occurred between the hours of 7:30 p.m. Sunday December 11, and 5 a.m. Monday morning. The theft was discovered by Assistant Scout- master Ken Gruenfelder on his way to work. Scoutmaster William Meyer reported the $500 loss to the police. It would be appreciated by the Scouts if information regarding this loss be reported to the police or MY 4-0250. The Farmingdale Baptist Church proudly announces the Long Island premiere ;rformance of the most, jpecent Intata Iby renowned composer John W. Peterson. The Christmas cantata, Down From His Glory, is a 45-minute work for choir and soloists. Pastor Darwin Bacon states that the public is cordially invoted to the Cantata Service which will be held at the church on Sunday, December 18, at 7 p.m. The church is located at 610 Carmans Road, Farmingdale. An informal reception will follow immediately after the Cantata Service. Guests are welcome to attend the reception. According to choir director Dr. Stanley Brobston;-.the cantata is very melodic and appealing. Choir members have responded to the thrill of preparing a new work, and have also enjoyed the blending of their voices with a sound-track accompaniment. Both experiences are new to the church choir. The taped sound- track accompaniment - in essence, a full orchestra - is made available from the publishers of the cantata. SANTA CLAUS lends his ear to the requests of a trio of youngsters at Sunday's Christmas party at the Convenience Health & Beauty Center in Farmingdale. Santa will be walking the streets of Farmingdale passing out.candy canes and talking to the children every afternoon until Christmas. He will also make an appearance at the Associated Food Market on Saturday, December 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon for last minute requests. < [ Post photo by Bob Starrett ] Starrett will continue to edit The Post, serving as its editor- publisher. Plans have already been made for The Post's ex- pansion of its news coverage, circulation areas and advertising to even better serve the local community. The Farmingdale Post was established in 1920 by Jesse Merritt, for whom Merritts Road was namea^^has' been the of- ficial newspaper of the Village of Farmingdale for the past 57 years. The former publisher, Joe Merendino, edited The Post from 1957 to 1959 when it was owned by Griscom Publications of Glen Cove. Merendino, Ted Julian and Steve Vid formed Merlin Printing Company and Island Wide Publications in 1961 and took over as publishers of the Farmingdale Post. Starrett joined The Post as editor in 1969, also editing the Wantagh-Seaford Enterprise, which was owned by Island-Wide Publications at that time. He also helped the corporation establish the Babylon Town News, the former Copiague News, in 1970. When both the Enterprise and the Babylon Town News were sold to independent owners, Starrett edited the Post exclusively and took over as editor-manager upon the retirement of Edith Seaman and the move to Florida by former publisher Joseph Merendino. Starrett came to Farmingdale from Newark, Delaware, where he served as editor for various newspapers owned by the Oxford Printing Company of Oxford, Pa. From 1960 to 1969, he edited the Cecil Democrat in Elkton, Md., the Avon Grove News in West Grove,' Pa. and the Oxford Press in Oxford, Pa. for the parent company. He also conducted promotional circulars for the Newark (Del.) Merchants' Association. Prior to joining the Oxford Printing organization, Starrett was editor and manager of the Cumberland Co.
