By Ken Martin We would like to bring to your attention some little known facts concerning the safe'handling of swimming pool chemicals. They can cause a fire or explosion if handled improperly. Chlorinating agents, such as H.T.H., are especially dangerous since they are strong oxidizing agents and you must take care that they never become con- taminated by any foreign matter. Such items as soaps, suntan lotions and other swimming pool chemicals, when mixed with chlorinating agents have caused fires and explosions of great intensity. By observing the following precautions, a serious accident may be averted. 1. Always follow directions on the label. 2. Avoid dropping or jarring containers. 3. Never store these chemicals within your dwelling or garage. Store only in a cool, dry, clean place in the original container and always replace the cover. 4. Dispose of spilled chemicals immediately by flushing with large amounts of water. 5. Do not reuse empty con- tainers and wash these con- tainers thoroughly with water and then dispose of them. 6. If you dispose of these chemicals, never mix them with household garbage. If you must dispose of any, contact your local fire department to. dispose of it for you. For those of you who are firemen and respond to a fire involving pool chemicals remember that you must use protective gear including Scott packs in chlorine smoke and also watch out for explosions. Rusty and oily water from hose streams has been known to cause them. It's best to clear your lines out- side before directing it on these chemicals.
