HOLIDAY INN 369 OLD COUNTRY ROAD off Meadowbrook Parkway Extt MI Old Country Road. Westbury.L.I. Mon. May 30 8PM View at 7PM NOTE ABOUT THIS AUCTION: Iran, the largest producer of handwoven carpets, and rugs has been a backward, slow-moving country for centuries. Suddenly with the advent of industry, oil, and free education, it zoomed to the 20th cen- tury. As a result the children who were the majority of the weavers, were lured away from the ancient art of weaving. In our opinion, this great art will soon be lost & so scarce that today European collec- tor's and dealers are rushing to America to collect these beautiful carpets. ORIENTAL RUGS WILL BE GIVEN AWAY AS DOOR PRIZES. Sponsor: UNIVERSAL GALLERY Terms: CASH or CHECK At the annual spring con- ference of the Nassau Long Island PTA, held May 19,1977 at Hicksville High School, Far- mingdale District Board members Patricia Normon and Helene Trattner were elected Recording and Corresponding Secretaries for the 1977-78 year. Northside School and Woodward Parkway Schools received certificates for having achieved a 10% increase in their mem- bership. The work of the conference covered the spectrum of PTA concerns and activities. Among several By-Law changes ap- proved was the addition of a fifth Associate Director. Leadership Training activities were covered in the President's Problem Clinic and 25 workshops for all officers and chairmen. The AM and PM sessions of the Continuing Education Workshop was Conducted by Mrs. Norman. Participants were made aware of the opportunities for adults returning to formal education as weU as those available to recent high school graduates. The workshop in Ecology was led by Patricia Schriro, also a member of the District PTA Board from Farmingdale. This workshop emphasized the urgency of developing en- vironmental priorities in each school and establishing programs designed to achieve these goals. Of immediate concern is the need for\ citizens to write to state senators asking that the con- tainer legislation be brought out of committee for consideration These bills, S704, B. Smith and A2208, Coopermah, provide for beverage containers to have deposit value. They also prohibit the sale of metal beverage containers with detachable parts (eg. flip top rings) as well as packaging with plastic loops These loops have caused the death of countless birds who have been unable to extricate them- selves once their heads have gotten into the rings. In the £umRfilatians Workshop led by Mrs. Trattner many aspects of bringing the PTA story to the public were explored. Once again PTA Council participated in Hardscrabble Fair by providing games for Farmingdale and visiting youngsters. An exhibit of PTA projects conducted by its member units was a focal point for adults and youth alike. A letter writing compaign was conducted as evidence of PTA legislative concerns. New York's U.S. Senators were requested to support the National Camp Safety Act (H.R. 2518, Sarasin - and S258-Ribicoff) presently before congress. Currently 28 states provide regulations specifically for youth camp safety, only six have adequately enforced regulations. There must be uniform safety regulations for children, regardless of where they live or attend camp. PTA Council steering com- mittee for the fair included: Edie Palermo (East Memorial); Eva Hansen, Susan Avallone (Woodward); Rory Bentevigno, Ann Palino (Howitt), Helene Trattner (Mill Lane), Rose Scardina, Mary Splaine (Senior High) under the chairmanship of Louise Finnegan and Pat Schriro. Participants at the fair included: Mary Splain, Rose Scardina and Maureen Ohlsson (Senior High School); Regina Dunn, Jay Jorgenson and Gladys Mena (Mill Lane), Linda Fischer and Madeline Bonietti, (East Memorial) Linda Travis, Peggy Campbell, Dotty D'Arco and Bobbie Muller Albany Ave); Gloria Wholars (Weldon E. Howitt); Laura Forte and Barbara Logan (Northside); Ruby Cook school contact representative, Northside and Eva Harrison, Carol Meilke, Sue Avallone and Joan Herrer (Woodward Parkway.) A special thank you is due to Karen Ohlsson and friends who spent most of Hardscrabble Day guiding the youngsters as they tried their hand at pitching pennies.
