0 pine 'Pbtfl By Ken Martin Thank God for a little rain, at least the firemen got a day off from the brush fires. Last week it got so bad that Melville F.P. went on mutual aid to Yaphank, about one hour's drive from here. The firemen from the South Farmingdale F.D. held a private fund drive and raised $300.00 to aid Mary Murphy. You will probably remember that she is the little girl from Patchogue who is undergoing a serious operation this week in Phila. Mary is the niece of Father Heinkin of Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church and is a chaplain of .the South Far- mingdale F.D. Ex Chief Artie Hendrickson of the Village • Fire Department gave credit to the Fire Preven- Kids To Paint Spring Mural \Are you less than a piece of earth? When a piece of earth finds a friend, that is, the spring, it gains a hundred thousand flowers.\ This year, the Hardscrabble Fair will be held on Saturday, May 21. Among the activities available to the children is the painting of the Spring Mural. The above quotation will serve as the mural's theme, and fifteen children will be given space on the mural board to paint the spring flowers of their own fancy. The library staff is also looking for someone with nice hand- writing to print the theme on the mural. The first fifteen children to sign up for the Spring Mural at the Children's Desk will be given space to paint on. If you would like to print the theme of the mural, please submit a copy of the above quotation in your best handwriting. The Children's Librarian will choose the most attractive example. Children participating in the Spring Mural should be accompanied by an adult if they are under six years of age. The Farmingdale Library will provide all the necessary materials. Those children wishing to sign up for painting the mural should do so as soon as possible, at the South Branch Library, in the Children's Room. The mural will be painted at the Main Library on May 21, from 10 am to 12 noon, at hall-hour intervals for each group of children involved. Safe Boating A Safe Boating Course for youngsters interested in ob- taining a New York State Boating License will be given the week of May 9 in Massapequa. \This course is required for all youngsters between the ages of 10 and 16 who wish to operate a powerboat,\ Saladino stated. \It will cover the principles of safe boating, rules of the road, basic navigation and seamanship.\ Sponsored by the Bureau of Conservation and Waterways of, the Division of Beaches, in cooperation with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the course will be held from Monday, May 9, through Friday, May 13, between 4 and 6 p.m. at the John J. Burns Town Park Marine Building, Merrick Road, Massapequa. tion Bureau for helping keep the village fire loss so low last year. East Farmingdale F.D. also credits their Fire Prevention bureau for cutting the number of fires in their industrial area by at least two thirds. Fire prevention pays off. Along these lines we would also like to ask all our readers to take time to do your spring cleaning. Now that the weather is nice, take time to clean out your cellars, attics and garages. Remember if you don't give fire a place to start, chances are that it will not happen. \Fire Calls for the Week Village of Farmingdale F.D Brush Fires Rescue Calls Vehicles Buildings Total East Farmingdale F.D.
