Recently, Winnie Phealan, an exchange itudent from Far- mingdale, visited the Rotary Club and gave a talk of her trip. She was going to major in French and had hoped to go to France on her exchange but due to cir- cumstances beyond her control, she was sent to Brazil and after about three months mastered a new language, Portuguese, and will now go on to major in it. She thanked Farmingdale Rotary for sending her on an experience she will never forget. She lived for four months with one family and six months with another, and was treated as one of the family. The towns she stayed in were small and the people all helped her through the first months, as she was the only person who spoke English there. The schools, after elementary, are specialized and the students then have a choice of business schools, normal schools (for teachers), and trade schools. The people don't get involved in politics. The capital of Brazil is Brazila, only 16 years old and is a modern city, but some of the people still look on Rio De Janeiro as the capital. The people do not have the modern conveniences we have here and the women do their washing by hand. The families she stayed with each had three maids so she did not have any chores to do. the maids work for room and board only. Womens lib has not arrived in Brazil yet. They think of North Americans as superiors and ask a lot about us. Their press and radio give news about us and the people are very much aware of what goes on in our country. You can buy the New York Times and Time magazine there. It has become a part of her life which she will never forget. String Concert On Monday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m. the New Light String Ensemble will present a free concert of meditative Indian Music at the South Farmingdale Branch Library on Merritt Road. Featured will be traditional Indian instruments - sitar, tamboura, tabla, mridangam - as well as western instruments. Open to the general public. t From [Continued from page 4 ] to return to the United States, The bleeding hearts in the country tell us that many of these traitors came from poor families and minority groups. What a shallow excuse. We were poor and came from a minority group also. Were these excuses for dodging the draft or deserting? Certainly not. Men who fought in the American Revolution and the Civil War were also poor and in the minority. Should they have fled to Canada or Europe? Freedom, honor and dignity are earned by fighting for them, not finding excuses for escaping from them. Now that you have pardoned these men, Mr. Carter, let us go all the way - let us give them a hero's welcome, a parade up Broadway, a reception at the White House, and enroll them in Ivy League Schools. After all, they should not be humiliated - they belong! President Carter's act is a degradation of our national moral fiber, and our future military posture. He has done all of us a disservice merely because -he wanted to keep a campaign promise - and not that he in his heart believes in what he did. President Carter, sir, men of honor serve, not shirk their duty. Steven E.Camp LTC (USAR)-Ret. Dear Mr. Starrett: •> While The American Civil Liberty Union drools over the death penalty for convicted murderers, as Christians, we should protest killing the unborn with our tax money. Abortion is name of the game which results in over 2 million crimeless un- born sacrificed for the con- venience of the spiritually poor. Americans are the world's most charitable and, the unborn would always have their financial support. Write your U.S. Senators and Congressman before the old and infirm are added to the \abor- tion\ solution. The life you save may be your own. Sincerely, Francis A. Collins.
