©aler HMites by David Weiser Gregory W. Carman Carman Heads Division 5 Gregory W. Carman, of Far- mingdale has been appointed Vice Chairman of Division 5 (Community Division) for the 1976 United Way of Nassau- Suffolk Campaign that will raise $4.4 million for 97 community human-care organizations during October and November. After a distinquished military career, Carman became a full partner in the law firm of Car- man, Callahan, Carman & Sabino, also of Farmingdale. Carman is a Town Councilman for the Town of Oyster-Bay. He is affiliated with several law- oriented organizations including the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, 3Nassau County Bar and Nassau Lawyers Association, and the Criminal Courts BarAsspciation. He has also been active with the local Republican Clubs, volun- teer Fire Department and Rotary, as well as United Way affiliated agencies including United Cerebral Palsy and Boy Scouts. Carman and his wife Nancy have four children including a recently adopted Korean child. Beginning with the Campaign Cabinet, Gregory W. Carman will be one of approximately 15,000 volunteers helping this year's St. James Student | Receive Honors Michele Durante, a sixth grader at Saint James School, Seaford, was recently honored by the New York State Teachers Association for her outstanding entry in the \My America: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow\ contest. She was the recipient of a bronze medal for her contribution to this Bicentennial contest, which consisted of a miniature replica of a covered wagon made from ice cream sticks. In ad- dition, 26 other students received Bicentennial certificates for \recognition of excellence in portrayal of our nation's heritage during this Bicentennial era.\ These students are: Kim Car- pentier, Patricia Cheswick, Tara Thompson, Paula Hilker, Maryann Lomonte, Kenneth Collins, John Giacalone, Teresa Erskine, Robert Yurasits, John Furino, Karen Keohane, Dana Hutzel, Maureen Horn, Cathleen Ann O'Brien, Suzanne Murphy, Anthony Brunet, JoAnn Bellotti, Kathleen Horn, Susan Dmuchowski, Kerry Carr, Linda Darienzo, Regina Capohno Jayme Delano, Ronald Sagistano, Marilyn Hesselnberg, and Kristine Thompson. Inconsistency in policy made by Farmingdale High School ad- ministration through a series of wavering rhetorical judgements has dictated the allotment of contributions made by the FHS Dads' Club, an independent fund raising organization whose aim is to appeal to all extra-curricular activities. Fiscal mismanagement of Dads' Club donations, inspired by high school hierarchy, school activities. Last year, of the approximate $5,500 donated by Dads' Club to extra- curriculars, nearly 89% funds were directed to the high school athletic department; the slim remainder of financial aid, ap- proximately $600, went to non-athletic extra-curriculars. Jim Keats, president of Dads' Club, staunchly contradicts the im- pression of sports weighted consciousness, stating, \It was the right thing to say years ago when we were founded by a bunch of football fathers, but we're trying to get away from that image.\ Clifford P. Mackin, FHS assistant principal, agrees with Keats on the progress and purpose of Dads' Club, noting, \They now will support any extra-curricular. They're trying to broaden their image.\ However, Mackin reflected, \We (FHS administration) have requested... that clubs go to the Student Activities Council (SAC) for money... they (SAC) can give loans.\ \I discourage the using of Dads' Club for any funding,\ Mackin opined, \If SAC didn't have any money to help them (extra- curriculars), then we (FHS administration) would go to an outside organization. We encourage extra-curriculars to negotiate funding through SAC simply because SAC is an internal school program:\ In direct contradiction with Mackin's statement, John McLennan, ^illllltlllllllllllltllllllllllllllillllllllllllllllllllltlEIItlllllltlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll I1IIIIIIIIIIIII1IIIIIIII11I11IIII1III III11HII1III1I11IIIIIIII 11IIIIIIIIIIIII1IIIIIIIIIIIIIII lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllftllllllllllllllllfllllll FHS principal, appealed at the Sept. 21 Dads' Club meeting, claiming, \We (administration) are having problems with peripheral things (non-athletic extra-curriculars)... It's people like us (administration representing extra-curriculars) who have to find new revenues!\ Various sources have indicated that there have been some \upper level\ struggles occurring, within administration itself, pertaining to Dads' Club, feeling that Dads' Club was becoming too influential in the school and that extra-curriculars would soon be virtually knocking down their door in search of financial aid. Keats insists, \We don't want to go against administration. They run the school, we're not educators. We are. not here to interfere, we are here to assist.\ He added the conclusion that Dads' Club does decide in favor of the clubs' appeals in most cases, yet asserting the fact that administration and SAC have to grant final approval in all instances. Last year, an appeal made by the Paper Lion to Dads' Club in request of funds was accepted by Keats, yet refused by ad- ministration. S.N. Curti, advisor to the Paper Lion, said, \Mr. Mackin felt it would be bad precedent for Dads' Club to donate money, in- dicating that fund raising should be dealt with by the board and the community.*' Curti theorized, \Basically the philosophy of ad- ministration is that Dads' Club should be involved with some groups and not others... there is not a clean cut definition of what Dads' Club can and cannot do.\ Posed with the dilemma that Dads' Club could not serve all points of the school if extra-curriculars could only approach SAC for financial support, Mackin hedged with, \a... philosophical question: 'Where does SAC end, and where does Dads' Club pick up?' \ Interpreting this policy, John Sohikian, SAC treasurer, concluded, \They (ad- ministration) are not giving Dads' Club a chance to prove them- selves.\ z o o m -o o z c TO o > o OB m TO 3 To 282 Main Street J (formerly Von Leesen's)} phone...249-98981 WTsfcTP phone 798-9781.
