The Board of Education denied the request and promised op- position to the referendum if the library insists on going ahead with its plan. \We will campaign vigorously against the referendum,\ School Board President Frank Ranieri stated. Although the Board of Education is a \sort of parent agency to the library board and is charged with the responsibility of raising funds for the library budget, the Board of Library Trustees can legally call for a public vote without the sanction of the Board of Education. The purpose of the Public Works Employment Act is to stimulate employment in the construction trades in areas of high unemployment. The latest figures for construction trades unemployment is 22.3 percent, according to Dow's letter. Although there has been no date announced for accepting applications under the act, a mad scramble is anticipated when the' announcement is made. The library requested speedy action from the school board in order to qualify for the funds. According to Dow's letter to the board, \This is a unique op- portunity for the greater Far- mingdale community to con- struct a modern, functional expanded public library facility at no cost to the local taxpayer.\ The school board has been attempting to sell the Main St. School property and add the revenue obtained from the sale to the school budget revenue to further reduce the tax rate in the Farmingdale district.
