Shirley Bassey At Westbury The dynamic, magnetic and sophisticated Welsh songstress, Miss Shirley Bassey.'will appear in person at the Westbury Music Fair, for one week of concerts, Monday, Oct 25, through Sunday, Oct 31. Appearing with Miss Bassey as special guest star will be the acknowledged \King Of The One Liners\ and \Prince Of The Stand-Up Comics,\ Henny Youngmart; fiddle and all. Shirley Bassey, who started singing when she was 16, can truly be called a major in- ternational star. One reviewer has called her the \female Tom Jones,\ but perhaps even that flattering analogy doesn't do her justice. The only thing you can be sure of is that when Bassey is on stage, she makes an impression that is lasting and emotional.\ Miss Bassey, a recording artist for twenty years, has earned thunderous applause all around the world. She was awarded her first silver record for \As Long As He Needs Me,\ and later a gold record for \Goldfinger.\ Other hit singles and albums like \Big Spender,\ \Banana Boat Song\ and her new LP for United Artist records, \Love Life And Feelings\ prove Shirley Bassey to be a super-star and an elec- trifying entertainer. Twenty years after her first hit single, Miss Bassey is still a contender for chart honors with every new release. No other female singer can claim such staying power. She is also Britain's super-star of in- ternational status, a magnificent interpreter of songs, whose creativity has still not been fully tapped and whose career prospects continue to expand. Henny Youngman, who, during his countless years in show business, has been aptly tabbed \King Of The One Liners,\ evolved, from a musician-turned- accidental-comedian into the national prototype of a stand-up- comic. His style of delivery and - his brand of joke have become cultural reference points. The attributes that have gained Henny his stature include a rapid-fire delivery, a few flicks of the bow on the tarnished fiddle, and the ability to peel off a couple of hundred jokes in a single 45- minute performance. Henny Youngman is quite simply reputed to be America's premier joke teller and has been wearing that crown for many, many laugh-filled years. Miss Shirley Bassey and Henny Youngman will perform Mbn, Tues, Wed, Thurs (8:30 phi), Sun (7:30 pm), $12.50 & $11.50, Fri (8 & 11:30 pm), Sat, (7 & 10:30pm), $15 & $12.50. The Society has been performing these concerts since it organized in the spring of 1961 and has grown in popularity each year. Local Musician Nicholas B. AlesbJn, on the Alto Balalaika, will be performing with this group of over 20 artists. The musicians are specialists in playing their melodious, three stringed, two octave instruments which have a history dating back several centuries. The warm haunting tones produced by these instruments have been described by researchers and music critics as that missing sound lying between that of the guitar and mandolin. Tickets for the performance can be obtained by calling Aleshin evenings at MY 4-5724 or writing directly (Checks Payable) to Alice Tully Hall Box Office, 1941 Broadway at 65th Street, New York, New York 10023. For me the land is a need. In the city I want to scream, that's why I've seen so little of Hollywood in the past twelve years. There are hundreds of people on a movie set. A man feels surrounded.\ Besides the 1114 acre ranch in California, he also owns six farms in Pennsylvania, his home state. * * * Richard Widmark, who hates tv talk shows and while starring in \Madigan\ a couple of years ago, insisted that his contract with NBC- TV contain a clause that he will not be required to appear on one, has this to say: \I watch them (talk shows) all the time, thev amaze and fascinate me, but I think a performer should do his work and then shut up. What happens is that the most valuable thing an actor can have - his privacy - gets destroyed. When someone like Laurence Olivier appeared on the Dick Cavett Show several months ago. I thought it was interesting but I kept asking myself 'Why is he doing it?' Some actors need it, of course - that's why they are in the business. But to expect every actor to do it makes a mockery out of our profession.\ *i * * Bob Newhart, about comedy and his career: \I was the kind of guy who used to run home every Sunday night to catch the Ed Sullivan Show to see if there were any new comedians funnier than I was. I could tell you exactly how many albums Mort Sahl sold and Shelley Berman sold and how I outsold both of them until Allan Sherman came along and outsold me two to one. I was like a dog that barked a lot I tried to carry the whole load myself so people wouldn't catch on. When my first show flopped I kept telling myself that I could always go back to accounting and make a living there. Luckily this did not prove necessary.\ * • • A THOUSAND AND ONE KNIGHTS: \Porcupines a fast moving musical comedy revue with music by Cary Hoffman and lyrics by Ira Gasman, is the permanent attraction in the Valentine Room of Once Upon A Stove ...
