This huge old tree at the corner of Main St. and Carmans Rd. took a piece of sidewalk and power lines Youth Council Goes To Shea On Wednesday, August 4, it was \Yea at Shea.\ AU the centers midget Mets marveled as the miraculous Mets meted out a magnificent mortification, mopping up a 4-0 massacre over Montreal. The matadors of the post-meridan maneuvers were Grote and Millan with multiple base merits. Masteroms in the meadows were made by many with their mitts. Merriment and mirth was made for the multitudes when Torre mortalized the myth that he may never manage to steal the middle base. (He was un- mistakeably missiled out from the mound!) On Friday, August 6, one of the big events of the Main Street summer season was held against the fence of the playground. Of course it was the Penny Carnival. Many prizes were won by the happy boys and girls, with some youngsters so loaded down that they could hardly walk. Paul Rodriguez alone won close to 42 prizes. Games such as a number wheel, ring toss, cards in the hat, get the penny on the plate, get the penny in the glass in the fish tank, make-up by Miss Linda, a clown throw, bombs away, and a refreshment stand were there for the playing. The Basketball Championships are down to the finals. The playoff game for the 5th and 6th grade will be between Albany Ave. and Woodward Parkway, each with a 9-1 record. Woodward Parkway is going to come out with something in both divisions. Their 7th and 8th grade team is tied with Mill Lane for the title. Both playoff games were held on Tuesday, but due to time the results will be in the next issue. The Howitt pool has completed their third swimming session and here are the \fish\ results: 53 Poliwogs, 71 Flounders, 43 Fish, 36 Flying Fish and 18 Sharks. Hurricane Belle was the cause of the elimination of many events on Monday for Youth Council activities. At Northside the Jr. Olympics had to be cancelled because the water in the field was not deep enough for swimming and too deep for running! The second Adventurer's ex- cursion had to be cancelled also because of excessive dampness. Hurricane Belle paid the Farmingdale area a visit late Monday night and hurried through on her northbound journey. Belle arrived at about 11:30 p.m. and left early Tuesday morning. Although the storm was not nearly as strong as an- ticipated. Belle left her un- mistakable calling card of overturned trees, broken branches and downed wires. Belle wrote her name in the minds of the local firemen with indelible ink as the storm .produced call overlapping call for downed* and sparking* wires.' trees hitting houses and house fires. , South Farmingdale volunteers answered two house fire calls during the peak of the storm The first at 119 Radcliffe Ave. and the second at 16 Paula Drive. Belle's downpour* of rain caused flooding problems throughout the area as streets ran deep with water in low areas it posed an interesting problem for the firemen as they shuttled from call to call. \Motor Avenue and Heisser Lane completely flooded out,\ said one call over [ Continued on page 7 ] Nab Teens For Burglary Two 16 year old Farmingdale youths were arrested last week by Eighth Squad Detectives and charged with the burglary of a Hillside Road home. The home at 65 Hillside Road was entered through a rear window on August 3 sometime between noon and 4:45 p.m. Eighth Squad Detectives S. GoodntSm and F., Santavaria arrested Vincent Lalli, 16, at his home at 55 Hillside Road at 10:15 p.m. At 11:50 p.m. the two detectives arrested John Gib- bons, also 16, of 64 Jefferson Rd., at Eighth Precinct headquarters. Police also reported the Stern's Pickle Works, 111 Powell Place, Farmingdale was entered sometime between July 27 and August 2, The sweet-toothed burglar escaped with ten boxes of candy and five quarts of cherries. The home at 266 Oakview Ave., Farmingdale, was entered through a front window between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on August 2. Reported missing were an electric guitar, amplifier and a casette player.
