'ptoePtuQ* This time of the year brings some special hazards which I would like to point out. The major hazard is charcoal grills. The safest starter is an electric one. Remember once the fire is started to put this starter in a safe place where no can grab it and where it is not against combustible material. . . If you use a flammable liquid starter, pour it on before lighting the grill. Once you light the grill, do not add more. Every year we have rescue calls because someone adds fluid when the coals are hot and the can blows up. Because the fire travels from the grill into the can. Also don't bring the grill in- doors for any reason. Not only is it a fire hazard it also uses the oxygen in the room. This is also the time of the year to clean your air conditioner and refrigerator. Vacuum all of the dust off of the motor, compressor and heat exchanger grill. Check all the wiring to make sure it is not frayed. Replace it as necessary. If you're installing a new unit, make sure you have proper wiring for it. If it blows fuses don't over fuse. Find out why it is blowing fuses, and correct that condition.' Follow the manufacturer's instructions and don't take short cuts. Last week I wrote about mouth- to-mouth breathing and swim- ming pools. Along this line be careful about the electrical connections to your pool. You must have a grounded circuit on your filter and lighting. The only safe plug is a three' prong plug. To Check the ground, take an or- dinary light bult, put it in a base that has two wires with bare ends. Put one bare end in the grounding hole which is U shaped. Put the other end into one side of the socket hole. If the bulb does not light, put this end into the other hole. If it still does not light, you don't have a grounded circuit and it is unsafe, and someone may be killed. If you don't know how to rewire the outlet get an electrician. The best protection is a ground fault protector which can be pur- chased from Sears, or Wards, Electrical Supply and Pool Suppy stores. The Village F.D. Antique Muster Team won 7 trophies at a drill held in Weston, Conn, last Saturday'with the Water Witch Engine Co's hand pumper. One of the trophies was for outstanding sportsmanship.
