First Hnircuf (Continued from Page I) Mashkow , in true motherly fash- ion , es Bob wisked the hair from Andy ' s head. His father was talcing the whole operation in a different fashion. ''Here I thought I'd get at least s year ' s break from having to have the baby ' s hair cut , \ he smiled , \ and look at this—five weeks old and he ' s getting a haircut already. \ Finally it was done , Andy had received his first \ crewcut. \ Mrs. Mashkow had mixed feelings. \You can see his little face much better now with all that hair gone , \ she smiled. \But he looks so different , \ she added. Andy ' s reaction? He didn ' t seem to mind. He sat through the entire operation , almost , without a wall. But towards the end he protested a bit. He re- minded onlookers of a recruit who sat in the barber ' s chair with the Instructions , \Just a trim , \ and who came out bald. Bob also took the incidentvery calmly. \Were you nervous , \ we asked? \No , he smiled , \ it was wasy. In fact it was a lot wasler than first haircuts usually are when the baby is older. B y the time they are about a year old , they had had needles and visits to doctors , and then any white coat will scare them. \ Barbers , for the most part , it should be noted , wear white coats. And , as a result , youngsters usually aquirm and scream during their first experience at the barber , Bob said. Is this a record , we wonder- ed , We polled local barber shops to find the answer. It certainly was—until we called Larry ' s Barber shop in Potch- ogue. There the owner , Larry Collocola , ended our hopes with the Information that he once gave a haircut to a boy who wa? just tow weeks old. It seems the youngster ' s parents believed in the '' old coontry \ custom of having the hair cut et an early age to give lt moe strength In future years. The nurses at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital were no help in our search for \Andy ' s re- cord , \ either. They reported that about 1 in every 10 or 15 babies have lots of hair. But , we questioned , a haircut at five weeks of age—isn ' t that unusual? \It happens , \ was their reply. Sometimes mothers do the chore themselves at home , they added , snuffing out al! hopes of having witnessed a record-making hair- cut. What does the future hold for Andy ? Another haircut to an- other five weeks? \ if so we are going to let it grow , \ said his father klddlngly. WHl&ALfi'S FEATURE THIS WEEK f Selusi!
