Cdsuperiso ii (Continued from Pag e I) district-owned buses , made by the Division of School Business Management , State Education De- partment , contends that the cost of a district-owned bus system is lower. Their figures show that In 1966-67 , for example , it would cost an estimated $196 , 200 for the district to contract for buses , while the district-owned system could op- erate for $175 , 420 . While taxes being the Impor- tant point , most residents would wonder how this cost difference affects them. The summary estimated that over a six-year period , from 1965 to 1971 , the district would have to raise by taxation a total of $234 , 225 to pay fr contract busing; while under the district-owned system , the sic-year total costs would be $203 , 140. These totals , however , do not show extra-curriculum activi- ties , field trips , etc. The cur- rent contract Includes an extra $25 , 000 for this purpose. If this amount were to be applied to the costs , lt would add a $150 , 000 spread between the two systems , oever the six-year period with the district-owned system lower. Of this maount , system lowe r of this amount system lower. Of this amount however , operating costs must be paid by both systems , which would total an estimated $10 , 000 per year , covering salaries , bus operating expenses. This would leave an estimated $90 , 000 left , over the six-year period, for a saving by the district-owned sys- tem , since It has been said that the district-owned buses would be avallabe for this use. There are those who will say , •'This all sounds good in theory, but will It work that way. To find the answer let ' s check with the Sachem Central School , System #5 , which em- ploye s both contract busing and maintains a district-owned fleet. In a cost analysis estimate which had been made for the 1963-64 school year , the district estimated that it would run their 16 district-owned buses at a cost of $5 , 562.47 per unit . At the same dme they would employ 16 additional buses through con- tract , which would cost them an school year , the district es- timated that it would run their 16 district-owned buses at a cost of $5 , 562.47 per unit. At the same time they would employ 16 additional buses through contract , which would cost them an estimated $6 , 295 per bus for the year. The diet- , rict-owned bus total included a number of extra activity trips , while the contract buses did not Where ls this savings coming from? Several areas. Secondly, the district- owned system , through the buy- ing power of the state can cut costs to some degree. For example , gasoline costs could be cut because the state does not pay the gas tax on their pur- chases. This would bring the district cost for gasoline down to an estimated ten cents per gallon price paid by most bus companies. The big question which has been asked is should the district go into the busing business , or should lt remain soley ln the educational field. This Is the question which district residents will answer Wednesday. LADIES MEETING SET MASTIC - The Ladles * Auxil- iary of the Mastic Fire Depart- ment will meet at 8 pjn.
