THE FREEPORT NEWS VOL. I. NO. 22 FREEPORT, LONG ISLAND, N. Y., FRIDAY, JULY 15, 1921 PRICE FIVE CENTO WARD SYSTEM FOR VILLAGE FINDS FAVOR Board of Trustees of Nine Mem- bers is Poposed Under Suggested Plan. INJURED THREE TIMES GROWTH OF COMMUNITY DEMANDS SOME CHANGE Four Diitrlcti Would Be Created and Two Representatives Elected From Each One. Sentiment Is rapidly developing li favor of dividing the village Int. wards, Increasing the noreber at mem hers of the village board from five ti nine, and electing two members fron each of the four wards Into Wblcl the village will he partitioned. This Is looked upon as a loglca means of modifying the village gov eminent so as to make It more re spiuislve In tlie needs of the column idly. uxd keeping It in step with tin rapid growth of Ihe village. At the presold lime hot H \Hie-trustees and Ihe village president Hi e elected \at large,\ that Is, they are not chosei to represent any particular section ol the village., bill to try to keep labs mi the conditions In all parts of village. Such a system was entirely right ami proper when Freeport was a much smaller place, and Ihe members of the. hoard of trustees knew practically every cltl/.en In Ihe village, but the village has long since outgrown that stage. Some of. Ihe trustees discussed the matter Informally, and seemed lo think the plan a goisl one. Trustee Mnxsoli declared that the village could make the change. ruder the ward System a trustee elected lo represent a given ward would have Ihe Interests of I lull ward always to the forefront, and would'bs working to secure for his section Its full share of civic Improvements. If he BOIIfJH re-election on his record, he would not have to go before the whole vlllu, r e for I I vote to re-elect him, hut f+irr the people of Ids own ward, be Village president would be elected I large\ as at present. A figurative kick in the lumbar re- gions was aiiilnlstered to the I'recporl Hoard of \lllag e Trustees by the Nas- sau and Suffolk Lighting Company when the trustees referred to the gas company the complaints received about leaks in various parts of the village killing trees und hedges. The reply i.f the company was at follows: \<;entleinen : We are In receipt of yi.tlr letter at June \J.\i calling our at- tention to numerous gas leaks, etc., throughout the village and asking us lo have same remedied al once. Tills Wt will he very glad lo 1I11, hut for the past few years we have not earned our operating expenses and last year our losses were over 179,000. \This loss was due in a great meas- ure to the fact that your board refused to allow this company to earn a suf fblent return on its Investment and that money received was liisullicieni not only to do the repairs you speak of, but giving the people and taxpay- ers of Freeport the service they are entitled to, and which we regret very much that owing to the conditions we ypeak of we have not been able to render. Kor some time past there lias been talk of ex- tending the village to the south so as I\ take in all the waterfront territory between the south boundary of the vil- lage and the bay. It Is now proposed io extend the limits northwnrd. There seems to he a little more tulk about the northward extension than about the southern extension, although the Inner project has been talked of for a longer time. At the present lime the northerly limit of the village Is a line about 200 feet north of Seaniuli avenue. The new territory which it is pro- posed io annex lo the village extends It is now definitely deckled thai otir j \ s fl \' \ s l''\'«-*t avenue and is uow In carnival will be held on Olive boule-j' 1 \-' lt<\<»evelt district. This would move the northern boundary of the village about H.OtMl feet further north. This section is supplied with electric light, gas and water as part of the Roosevelt districts. It does not have police protection at the present time, and that is the principal reason that many of the residents want to get Into the village of Kreeport. The southerly limits of the village now extend in a general easterly and westerly direction south of Front street, and it Is suggested thai they be run south to the water, particularly Don't furnei Mint we need workers for the tag day .his Siitunlay.
