The adolescent daughter of a wealthy family summering in New England becomes upset when her mother refuses to cancel a scheduled afternoon party despite the sudden death of their nearest neighbor , a poor farmer. The second film is also an adaptation of a famous tale , the Civil War story \Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge \ , by Ambrose Bierce. The bitterness of death is contrasted to the sweetness of life as tasted by a young man con- demned to death by Union soldiers. This poetic film won an Academy Award in 1962.
