Boating & Fishing By Howard Swanson I I read with disbelief a letter sent to the BULLETIN urging that a referendum be called in an effort to get the public to vote for the acquisition of the Isbrandtsen and Thorne properties. I can 't believe that any educated mind would vote to increase the Town of Islip ' s land holding any fur- ther. It ' s already out of proportion with 37 per-cent of the property taken off the tax rolls which has a serious effect on the tax paying public. Just above this letter was a statement by Supervisor Peter F. Cohalan in which he urged tax relief at all levels of governmen t as an absolute necessity for senior citizens. He stated that sales taxes , school taxes , property taxes and income taxes must all be re-evaluated with respect to senior citizens to recognize that (a) their income levels are not sufficient to meet this overwhelming burden and (b) that they have contributed heavily in these areas over many years and deserve a tax break , so to speak. I fail to recognize how we can acquire two large pieces of property and expect a tax break at the same time. The more land that is taken off the market you can expect higher taxes to follow. I can still remember the boloney expressed in the area when Macy decided to build its complex. Some argued that our taxes would come down with the acquisition of the Robbins Farm on the then Islip Boulevard. If anything the taxes jumped almost out of sight. Beware my friends of those who express themselves with authority and who would have you believe that you ' re getting something for nothing...Everything costs and the way we ' re headed in this day and age , we 'll be priced right out of our pants. Creeping socialism I call it and that ' s what we 'll have if we allow the government to take over everything that we hold dear. That ' s what we 'll hand our future generations and I' m sure they won ' t appreciate the gift any more than you do right now. Along the same vain , have you been down to the Bay Shore Marina lately? I heartily ap- proved what the Town originally had in mind and still do but the way things are developing, we will have the County ' s largest garbage facility if something isn ' t done and quick. Beer cans , broken bottles and other debris is strewn about the place with reckless abandon and little regard to the beauty of the place. Mark my words , the trees that have been planted will soon disappear as the warm weather approaches unless some sur- veillance is undertaken. What a shame that people have to be so slovenl y and spoil it for persons who do care. Lynn and Peter Newins celebrated their wedding an- niversary last Sunday and to cement the ties that bind , they took a trip to the nostolgic village of Mystic , Conn. I was given to understand that they were married there a few years back and returned to renew their vows. They are a lovely couple. In the meantime , John Sullivan returned to the Bay Shore Marine Basin with the greatest sun tan you ever saw. He says he got it over on the beach and that the cold weather just added to it. He looked as tan as Billy Svingoes who spent his winter in Mexico. Understand that Al Sabiston ' s son is old enough to steal bases having graduated into the majors in the Little League. John thinks that Al would be an A-l instructor in this department having had so many years of experience. And yes Al , the wind did die down a little as I went quietly out of the basin. The Suffolk County Police Department ' s J-Boat had to be hauled for a wheel change. Even our men in blue are finding out that the wind and tide does strange things in the channels. Phil Durkin ' s 29 ft. Pacemaker was launched as was Tom Cumberlidg e ' s 24 ft. skiff \SIN n TONIC\ , Ed Von Gerichten ' s 28 ft. skiff \SEA FA II \ , Mike DelVecchio ' s 21 ft. skiff \MISTY TOO\ , Joe Lannon ' s 24 ft. skiff and Ron Mahonev ' s 25 ft. skiff ¦•M&M\ . * The rain curtailed work at Brewster ' s shipyard to a great extent but the boys did manage to launch a few boats to lighten the push that will come shortly. Isadore Schneider ' s 16 ft. out- board was launched for the season along with Merle Halls 35 ft. Chris Craft \8 BELLS\ . Merle ' s boat is undergoing some additional work before being officially commissioned. Charles Wyatt recently pur- chased a 34 ft. Hatteras and had it delivered to Hampton Bays , the port he will sail from. William Johnson ' s 23 ft. O'Dea Sailboat was launched and is at its berth in the yard. Oak Gentry , co-owner of ' the Starfish Marine Basin , proudly showed me his annual award certificate presented him on his catch ofa 73 lb. 8 oz. White Marlin. Oak caught his fish 20 miles south of Shinnecock Inlet on a 30 pound test line. The fish scaled 7 feet 1 inch in length and presented Oak with his greatest fight ever. Along the same note , Don Steele took his John Dory off the flats in Seaford and came home with 50 good size flounders and no one gave him a prize save the kiss he got from his wife . George Plandering of St. James took home a John Dory , Sal Gaeta of Far Rockaway broke down and purchased a Cox Trailer for his boat which he purchased at the Boat Show this year. John Andrews of Elmont will sail aboard his new 18 ft. Caravelle powered with a 115 hp Johnson and Tony Paone of Islip Terrace traded his 18 ft. Bowrider for a 23 ft. Mako I O which he loaded with equipment. Herman Hammer , vice president of the Gibson & Cush- man Dredging Corporation , has been appointed to serve on the Coastal Engineering Program Advisory Committee to help the Sea Grant Institute in its plan- ning . The program is oriented towards resolving current , practical problems with the primary assignment geared toward identifying and establishing a program priorities based on protection needs for optimum use of Coastal property. Mr. Hammers has accepted the invitation to serve and will meet with Peter Sanko , Marine Ex- tension Specialist in the Sea Grant Office on Stony Brook campus. Lots of luck Herman.
