by Ellen Jensen 583-8920 We on the beach exten d our deepest sympathy to the family of Mrs. Ann Smith , a long-time resident of Fire Island , who passed away on Wednesday, April 2nd , after a brief illness. Mrs. Smith , mother of Anna Oakley, had lived for many years in Oakleyville and more recently in Point O' Woods. Mrs. Smith , who was known as \Gram \ to so many, will be sorely missed by all who knew her. (see obituary elsewhere) Blanche Pastorfiel d phoned to tel l me that she lost a dear friend , Germaine Simons , who died suddenly on Saturday, April 5th. All his friends in Ocean Beach and Seaview extend their sym- pathy to Mr. Simons. Congratulations to Mrs. Florence Edwards , who recentl y became a great-grandmother lor the third time. Joanne , Pebbie Edwards ' daughter , in Germany with her husband , had a boy. Carol Krenkle Egbert is very much better after her recent auto accident. She spent Easter with Mildred and also the following week. Saw Birdie Irwin of Ocean Beach last week in Finast. She is well and is looking forward to returning to the beach , but she will delay coming until the weather is warmer. Birdie sent greetings to all her friends here. Welcome back to Carita Smith. Her daughter Shirly and her four grandson ' s came with Carita and stayed for a few days. Most unhappily, Carita had been here only about two days when she came down with flu , but she is feeling better. Anna Wilder , her daughter Gen Kahler and Gen ' s two children had a fine stay on the island of St. Croix. While they were there , they saw Betty and Wes Little , Sr., who , it seems are not feeling too well. Wes has a serious operation last year , and Betty is having some trouble with her hip. We all hope to have a good report of them soon. Wes took Ann to visit the Hans Seidiers , who have a beautiful home up in the mountains of St. Croix. Annette and Mike Minski are back after having spent a month in Key West ' Fla. where they rented a house. They had a great time and great weather - only a half day of rain while they were there. Besides their Key West visit , Annette and Mike spent a week in North Carolina with Annette ' s family. Konni and Bob Knox have also returned; they may not have gone the furthest away, but they were away the longest of those who ' ve been on vacation - 9 weeks. They went to Miami where they stayed with Ronni' s brother , and while they were there , they visited Billie and Mary Lou. In Fort Lauderdale they spent time with Ricky and Sam from Bayview as well as with Julie and Chichi from Giovanni ' s. Then followed their cruise aboard the Nordic Prince , the best cruise ship Bob has ever been on. They visited a college fraternity brother of Bob' s in Venezuela and visited Elsie Peterson while she was on vacation in Aruba. Ronni and Bob had an exciting rapids trip in Jamaica and also visited Haiti , among other places in the Caribbean. Then back they went to Miami , where they visit Karen and Tommy Koller. After that they visited with Ronni' s parents who live in Stone Mountain , outside Atlanta , Georgia. While they were in Venezuela , they met the singer , Carol Fredette , who opened on March 24th in Atlanta at the Hyatt Regency Hotel <an interesting building which has its elevators on the outside and a revolving top. In any case , Ronni and Bob have become friendly with Carol Fredette and hope that she and her manager will be able to find time to visit the Knoxes in Ocean Beach. Joan and Jim Shodell returned last Sunday after a good week' s stay in London , where they stayed with their son Mike , daughter-in-law Ellie and Mike and Elbe ' s two children. More of Joan and Jim ' s trip next week. In addition to restaurants and bars having opened , Kline ' s has opened ; it was good to see Gert Sheldon and Dick again. Needless to say, they have already stocked their shelves and racks with all sorts of fascinating things. No word yet as to when they expect to open their other shop - where Herzl was. That bad storm of last week , the one that sent the barometer practically to rock bottom , fortunately did little or no damage to our beach. The rain was unbelievable , as were the angry bay and ocean . However , the gods favored Fire Island with a wind shift to the north- northwest. The winds were ex- traordinarily high for several days and caused great , swirling clouds of blowing sand (building up not-so-small dunes in the unlikeliest places , as on the walk from the Beach Club to Ocean Beach and just before the doc- tor ' s house). Last Saturday was not April but winter here - high , cold winds and snow flurries . Not time yet to turn on your water. Who knows? This week we may have that sudden heat that always seems to make spring about one day long. place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. St. Mary ' s R.C. Church will be conducting a Spring Rummage Sale in May. I' ve given up smoking and I feel like shouting it from the rooftops. (Thank you, Islip Bulletin , for letting me stand on your shingles.) I didn ' t decide to quit because I was afraid of all the dire con- sequences that would visit my body if I continued. Rather , I had just finished seeing \The Towering Inferno \ and for the life of me. couldn ' t strike a match. Actually, I'd finally- gotten made enough to stop wasting my money , and with the cost of cigarettes rumored to be rising, I decided the time was now. My friends had doubts when I told them the news. \That ' s great , \ they said. \How long has it been?\ When 1 answere d that it had only been seve ra l hours , they reserved decision. That was five weeks ago. Of course , besides picking up a few extra pounds . I' ve substituted a few extra habits. Like chewing pencils (after laboriously removing the lead , of course) , sighing alot , biting my nails , twitching my eye , and my hands shake. Maybe I'll give that up after seeing \Earthquake. \ There is nothing to compare to the harmony of barbershop quartet singing.
