Ecologists Offe r a Guided Tou r of the Fire Island Barrier Beach Four ecologi s ts from the National Park Service and the State Department of Environmental Conservation will conduct a guided tour — open to the public — of the Fire Island barrier beach on Saturday, Oct. 30. The Committee on Resource Management is sponsoring the event. The committee has issued the following information sheet on the tour : The day begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Smith Point parking field - with an orientation session. Coffee and buns served. At 10 a.m. the walk begins. We travel west on the ocean side of the beach at a leisurely pace. The dynamics of a barrier beach , erosion problems , fragile nature of the dunes , plant and anumal life , even sources of fresh water will be described. Ample time for questions and discussion At noon (and 2 miles down the beach) we pause for lunch. Hot chicken and coffee will be waiting. A long break allows for more questions and discussion. At 1:30 p.m. we cross over the dune and begin our return on the bay side. The delicate salt / fresh water balance of the bay and the comp lex web of life it supports will be described. Questions and discussion , of course. Tour concludes at 3:30 p.m. at the starting point. This is a \ never before \ op- portunity for the novice as well as advanced naturalist. You AND your friends are welcome. Bring your binoculars and camera , even tape recorder and notepad if desired. Clothing suitable for the weather. Rain date , Saturday, Nov. 6. There will be a $3.50 reg- istration fee to cover the cost of breakfast and lunch. Advance registration will be helpful to assist us in planning but not necessary. The PTA of the Ruth C. Kinney elementary school will sponsor a Halloween Costume contest on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 8 PM in the school cafeteria.
