No one who respects his basketba11_ knowledge dared to pick the Braves for playoff cdnsideration before the present campaign saw its first basket. The thinking was predicated on the Braves having lost five of seven last year's starters. __ It truly was a challenge for coach Corey, and not until the, Baker Braves upset the Walsh Eagles on the Eagle court did anyone take real notice of the miracle wrought. It was the first home defeat for Walsh in 42 games. It marked the turning point which propelled. the Braves into the 1971 Manhattan .Cup ; Playoffs. , Baker basketball mark. ~ ' The hopes for the Braves vs rests in the play of the starters ~’hfltting on all pistons. Jim Nel- lijgan, the- silent quax_'terbac_lt_gf_ the club, is the~key‘ball handler against the opponent's press. Mike Brown. has of late exerted {rebounding and offensive board *’power. ' Vinnie Lonengan has supplied the consistant tire pow- er through the season sporting a 14.9 median. Legaping strength is supplied by two sophomores- 6’1” Dave Rajski, and 6’ H! Bell. Their rebounding antics has p”fo-\ vided the Braves with an aver- age of 21 retrieves; son, the lack of faith in hopeful supporters, the odds pictured against us by an opponent's rec- ords. This year's bgmd of Baker’ Braves has put fortl_1 those rare commodities of courage and ef- fort. As the followers of the ELECTRIC HEATERS FOR PATIOS AND ADD-ON ROOMS INSTALLED! Braves take pride in its basket- ball ‘past, they carefully assess the future and realize the chal- lenge of securing the Manhattan‘ Cup‘. Herein lies that thin thread» of hope for Baker as the strength of coach Joe Corey’s Braves has proven itself by accepting chal- lenges; and as the age Aquarius gives way to a new sign, it may be the Braves who establish the age of “surprises” in the 1971 Manhattan Cup Playoffs. For Father Baker High School it will be the eleventh appear- ance in Manhattan Cup Play. It sets a personal and school reo- ‘ ord for Corey as he takes Baker into his fifth consecutive play- offs, also to date Corey's over- all record reads 48 wins and 16 loses for an awesome .750 av- erage which establishes anothe'1‘\* South ‘Park “Auto_ , 1 Service Inc. - Slution across from Gqlrtogrso on so.
