For those who suspect that the l)u.~ainoss of I‘iI|il0 is not always swoel, “Radio's Sn-,oml Chance\ proves stimulat- u:. The author's aim is to “ex- ..»nine the porformzmce of an in- ..nLry on which the health of de- .u-n.'x'a(‘y depends.\ “The radio industry cannot do a gx-Nd job in society‘unless citizens ..-. aware of what it is doing.” Is mo public kept informed by radio mu issues on which it is asked to make up its mind’! Is there a bal- ..-ice of ontez-t:ximm~nt and informa- ers of temporary leases of proper- ty. But. radio has fallen into the vested intc-rests. A Lrusl has been beta-nyeql, and the (langer is in con- tralizing of control in the hands of a few. “Unless people (lemzmd what. they want and like, they will end liking what they get.\ The author fears indil‘fo1'ence of the listening public. It is.eu<y to \shut the darn thing off\ when we do not like the by-omlcast, or turn to another progmm. But this won't solve ra- dio's problems. The hope of radio says ‘Siopnmnn, is in the futurv, with ‘use of ,,the new technique, Frequo.~.ncy Modulation. Some 3500 to 5000 new FM stations will result. The hope is that colleges and other educational institutions will establish programs. Music can come without interrupting commer- cials. have in W4.-st-.-rn N. The “powers that be” will try to prevent the use of FM, the author contends. He rleplpres the fact that we have no adequate safe-guards of the public interest; no means of constructive criticism of radio programs. Yet there is an opportunity to form groups, and to make their criticism felt. For those interested in what is right and wrong with radio, this 270 page book, available at the Lack- awunna Public Library, is worth reading. There must be some questions regarding game and fish in W es- tvrn and Southvrn N. Y. that have not been .1ns\\';-1'e(l satisfactorily. Maybe I lxave the answer.
