Grocers Thought the People Had No Money and Oid Not Lay In the Usual Supply. ' . As recently noted in Tir GAZETTE candy makers, packers of conned and. pre- nerved fruits, and other persons | who have this senson of the year to use unusual quantities of granulated sugar, in- cluding the housewives who want. to pre- pare their winter's stores of sweatments, There is, in fact, a famine in part all over the country so farus such sugar is con- cerned. Persons who buy of the wholesale grocers nothing but sugar, such as candy makers, ato the greatest sufferers, for the wholesale grocers (liscrlmlllntu against them in favor of those who bity other goods at the same time. - 'Mafiy of thesé persons believe (HSE the sugar famine is caused by some un- wartunted action of the Sugar Trust. | Ac- cordiug to the big dealers. this. is not true. Representative men who were asked shout the situation agreed upon this, and their explanation of the situation | is interesting. They say the present trouble comon from a misconception of the effect of the hard times. \It has been the custom,\ one of these men said, | \'for the sugar refiners to prec pare during July and August of each year a much larger quantity of sugar than is in actual demand then to méet the packing aud preserving demand later, This sugar is usually bought and stored by the grocers, wholesale and retail, against this demand. They all made the mistake this year of supposing that the money stringency \ex- legded to the people in general instead of being in fact confined to trade and exchange centres. \ \'That this was the fct, at least as in- dicated by the sugar trade, is shown by the further fact that the demand from packers and families has come just as usual. As a consequence, there is no extra supply of sugar to meet it. The sugar refiners are. «doing all they cun to meet the demand. They are working day: and night, and, al- though the price of raw sugar has advanced three-cighta of n cent a und, they bave not mised. the price anKZuLaugm. Per- haps this is because if they did raise. the price it would pay to import: sugar. It will take about three weeks for 'them to eateh up.\ © ' BISHOP -AYAN'S costs. Not Much Chance of Collecting Them from Father Dent. When Father Francis Dent, the expelled Franciscan priest, was defeated in bis suit against Bishop Ryan of Buffalo, the Court directed him to pay the Bishop $300 costs. The amount was st uently cut down to $190. Later on, when Father. Dent's suit against the Friars' Minor. was stopped by the withdrawal of ac jurora| the Court awarded him . and the money was paid on Beptember 13 in the Supreme Court in Brooklyn Bishop Ryad then had Father Dent before the Court as a judgment debtor, and his exami- mation in supplementary proceedings took place yesterday. Futher Dent says tho $250 costs he r- ceived was sent directly-from the court room by a messenger to his cousin, Mrs. Ann Butler of 2 East Thirty-second atreet, this olty, in payment for money lent, clothes, and board. His gold watch was in the possession of his brotner-in-lnw. He added that even his vestments were beyoud his reach. Theexamination was adjourned for two weeks. -N Ladies' and Children's Fall and Winter Under- For the most complete line of underwear and bostery at lowest prices visit Bler's. J. It is likely that an electrical dredge will come to be generally used on portions of rivers where it is at present impossible to work by any appl w in vogue. , In New Zealand the ordindry bucketand ind- der dredge is giving way to the electrically worked by reason of the heavy ex- pese it entails fm river and the necessity for ponderous machinery when it is used on rock bottoms, and where the depth exceeds say-35.or 40 fost. h e use of the now dredger has enabled severnl changes of gront benefit. to be made in the ordinary system of dredging, and now operations eah be carried on to a depth ot sixty feet without trouble., The differ- ence jn the number of working parts in the | two classes of machines is at once noticeable. On one of the in use at Waipori, each Indder that carries about 40 buckets has nearly 700 working parts that cannot be oiled, and that are exposed to tho no- tion of water san and dirt. These require almost constant attention and frequent re- newnls and cost §6-8 day to keep in repair. The steam engine fs also an expensive, item, and costs in over $20 a day, sometimes even more. These two items will run away with the respectable sum of over $8.000 in a year's work. On the other band the electrical to spend 700 upon the same magnifiwork $51?)le cost $8,030, cs having more time to give to paying 'work in consequenba@t ,the reduction in the amount necerary repairs. When engineers onge realize that between - $5,000 and $8,000 can be saved In one year by: the uso of the electrical dredge, and the work | will be bettor done, the old cumbersome and expensive plant will be shelved for | good and all. -Pittsburg-Dispatch.
