The Gommittee, after having given all the newspapers of tho country time enough to do plenty of guessing-, now calmly announoes that through Boston's lack of interest it has ' been obliged to relinquish the task. . «a I > The Grand Jury at New York Monday b igan an investigation of the railroad ac- cident at Spuyten Divyvil. It is quite possible that the jury will reach a more satisfactory conclusion tlian did the cor- o-iur's jury, whose vei'diofc was too sweep- ing by fur. %Jsm ^— Governor Cornell has issed a proclama- tion calling for a special election Feb. 28, in the 18th senatorial district, for a successor to the late Benator Wagner; Mr. Davis, a brother-in-law of Senator Wagner, and a rich Democrat of Mont- gomery cottnty, has declined to be a can- didate. A monument is to' be erected to thg memoay of Senator Wagner, but instead of stone let it be a statue that shall be powerful to protect the Uvea of those who Wrist themselves ( to the considerate care of the railroad officials. Scarcely a Friday passes without one or more hangings in the United States; but how many people have taken warning ard contolled their tempers ? In New lork city, as an instance in a small pari 'of tne United States, there are thirteen .persons awaiting trial for killing fellow beings. It is assorted upon the aatliority of the Buffalo Oourier that \the seat on thi United States snpreme. court, which may shortly be vacated by the retirement ol Judge Hunt, will be sought by number of the judges and lawyers of western New York for the Hon - . James G. Smith o! Oanaiiduigua, now an associate justice of tile supreme court of this state.\ Oattle raisers will be interested to know! that Canada is in a fail' Way to secure permission to import cattle from the Oaiitecl States for stock jim-poses, after first subjecting the animals to a quaran- tine similar to that which cattle from \Great Britdan have to undergo. Here- tofore, any intcrcou e with the United, States in this respect has been strictly: -prohibited. Tho man who is in'jail in Morrlsville ^charged with burning the Oneida Oem- numlfcy bam in -November last, a life-Ion^ OQ nmunity man himself, has been talk- ing to a newspaper man to the extent of tli jee columns of close print. Assuming that lie states the facts, the moral rotten^ ness of the organization is something fearful, and Noyes himself the arch fiend on earth. The merchants and dealers of a village do not differ muoh in their schedule of prices. One eannat afford to mark his goods muoh above his neighbors ; they all must necessarily come pretty near on a level if tlley expect to do business, and cannot afford to deal unjust or fraudu- lently with their customers. They have a reputation to maintain—a name for hon- est dealing to build up. Hence the relia- ble places to deal is with your home busi- ness nJen. But wo notice that manv are inclined to patronize the transient ped- dlers because they think they are getting goods dirt cheap. It is an easy thing to bo deceived by glib talking exports who have no reputation to maintain, for after they have made a sale they may be seen no more forever. A falsehood with them is ds good as a truth, for they r ever ex- pent to be seen again. Well t i-sguised shoddy, if once sold answera as well as tho most reliable goods. Many a family has repented at. leisure for deali-ig and thoughtlessly with strangers, they never expert to sees again. It is not a good way to do. Tho committe of the House of Repre se.ntatives on the Census has agreed to report favorably Mr. MoOoid's Apporti- onment bill with certain amendments, one of which makes the total number of the members of tho House 320. The bill now provid-s that after the 8d of March, 1883. (liv. House of Bepresentativos shall be composed of 320 members to be appor- tioned PS follows : Alabama 8, Arkansas 5, t alifornia 5, Colorado 1, Oonneotieut 4, Deuiwjire 1', Fjorida 1, Georgia 10, Illi- nois 21, Ind'ana 13, Iowa 11, Kansas 6, Ket tucky 11, Louisana 6, Maine 4. THg SURGEON; WoHDEBFDii SxntaicAii OPERATION—RE- MOVAL OF UMNARY'STOKKS FROM THE BliABDBR 3TJ0E«SFOII. Mr. Simeon Tiotsell, of Saugerties, N. X, had been treated for seven years by various physicians for what they call Stricture of the Uretha, without benefit. Ho finally consulted Dr. David Kennedy, of Kondout, N. X., -who found his trouble to be urinary caleuli or stones in the blad- der. The doctor at once removed the foreign bodies with She knife and then gave his great blood spaciftc, '\Favorite H'eniedy,\ to prevent their reformation. The entire treatment was successful, and Mr. Tietsell'B recovery was rapid and perfect. While \Favorite Kemedy\ is a specific in all Kidney and Bladder diseases, it is equally valuable in eaSos of bilious dis- orders, constipation of the bovfels, and all the class of ills apparently inseperable from the constitutions of women. Try it. Your druggist has it, and its cost is only one dollar per bottle. The lucky man is he who puts this advice in prac- tice. Don't forget the noma and address, Dr. David Kennedy, Bondout, N. Y. The doctor would have it understood that, while he is engaged in the introduction of his medicine, \Favorite iemedy,\ he still continues the practice of his profes- sion, but confines himself exclusively to office practice. He treats all diseases of a chronic character, and performs all the minor and capital operations of surgery. Walant loaf Hair Restorer. It is entirely different from all others. It is as clearas water, and, as its name ndicates, is a perfect Vegetable Hair Bes- orer. It will immediately free the head from all dandruff, restore gray h.rir to its natural color, and produce a new growth where it lias fallen off. It does not in any manner affect the health, which Sul- phur, Sugar of Lead, and Nitrate of Sil- ver preparations have done. It will change light or faded hair in a few days to a beautiful glossy brown. Ask your druggist for -it. Each bottle is warranted. Oomstook Bros., TJtica and G. N. Gritten- ton, Now York, Wholesade Agents. Dr. Bliss has authorized the statement that neither he nor.any of the physicians engaged on the case of the late president will present bills for services. Here at last is a bulletin that the American peo- ple will appreciate. Meanwhile, a con- gressional committee has been appointed to consider the matter and the services ol the physicians will doubtless be genor- ously recogViized. »-«>-* Once more bank-depositors have a warning in the failure' of the People- 's bank, 'at Tecumseh, Mich. The hard earnings of poor men and women, to the amount of $80,000, have been swept away —wild speculation the cause. The presi- dent of the institution has gone on a pro- lan? ed visit to Mexico. No punishment could be too severe for tho viliians who thus abuse the confideuce of the thrifty poor to their ruin. »^ . • A prominent officer of .-the Central \\Railroad estimates that the travel done 'upon, that road with passes given to state public officers, is the equivalent of more! than $100,000 a year in fares. With thi-. amount in hand, the company could handsomely equip its cars with proper heatiug apparatus, tools, fire extinguish- ers, and a system of signals that would ,; forever prevent that most inexcusable of all accidents—a collision from behind. There is no donbt that many of the ac- cidents on the railroads are due to thi .fact that the employees me overworked ami are required to bo on duty for too many cousecutivo hours. The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern has issued au order to the effect that all its engi- neers and firemen, after making then runs, shall bo off duty ten hours, givin\ them a chance to rest and then take the first engine in readiness This plan will commend itself to everyone. Yanderbilt and GonlQ. The New York correspondent of the Utica Herald makes the following com- ments on these 'rival -railroad magnates.' Gould is now more insatiable than ever. He pockets a railroad almost at the rate of one a month, but this affords little satisfaction so long as there are so many still bevond his reach. The fact that Vanderbilt got control of the Bead- ing was very annoying aud he is deter- mined yet to give the former an exper- ionce of his power. He feels tbat New, York can hold only 'one railway king and ol! others must take second rank, He can, when the favorable time arrives turn the power of Ms geaius backed by 100 millions of capital upon Vanderbilt, who, under such circumstances may call for quarter. It would not be surprising if Gould should form an aliance with John W. Garrett, President of tho Bal- timore & Ohio road, for the very pur- pose of conquering Vanderbilt. There would in that case be two railway longs, one in Baltimore and another in th»s city, forming a Northern .aud Southern empire. Bender this may sound strange but stranger things have happened. WAEBAKTED. Henry & Johnson's Ar- nica and Oil Liniment is warranted to pleaao ' 1 who use it. At this time, when so many persons .are baring their arms to the lancet, it is well to keep in mind the fact that the vaccine poison is very active. A tiny- bit of it, iutroducod into the blood by tin most commonplace accident, may cause untold inconvenience. Our exchanges .toll us of a mnn living near Troy who Bcrapped the skin of his nose with a fing- er which had lately been in contact with some of this matter, and passed a fort- night in bed as a consequence ; and of a woman at Glen's Falls who scratched an itching spot on her foot after touching her vaccinated arm, with f£e result of being crippled for a month. Next to the wisdom of behig vaccinated enough, must be held the wisdom of guarding oneself against being vaccinated too muoh. Mr. Scovilie's points on the motion for a new trial in the Guiteau case have been submitted, and cover all possible aveneus of ingenuity in behalf of a hopeless cause. The newspaper submitted as having been found in the juror's, room, and hearing Vie names of certain of their number, has 'been examined, and though the prepon- derating testimony will probably convii a> the public that the writing is a forgiry, tho presentment its clever enough to ex- cito interest. One of Mr. Scovilie's 'points claims an error on the part of the judge, in that he connived with the pros- ecution to give the prisoner free reign for his boistrousness, and thus aid the ex- perts and jury in passing judgment upon 'the plea of the defendant—insanity. The point, if the facts prove a pre-arrange- mont to this end, may be said to be well taken. Suferiiig Wompn. There is but very small proportion of the women of this nation that do not suf- fer from some'of the diseases for which Kidney-Wort is specific. Wben the bow- els have become costive, headache tor- ments, kidneys out of fix, or piles dis- 'tross, tako a package and its wonderful •tonic and renovating power will cure you and givo new life.— Watchman. Parker's Ginger Tonic regulates tutu important •rgans, makes the blood rich nnd pure, ,/md strengthens every part of the sjitem. Baa other oolwnn, A Gliost in Oswego County. A correspondent writes to the Oswego Express from Oswego Centre as follows : Mention has been made of the exploits of an unknown man in the swamp one mile west of Oswego Oentie on the road to Southwest Oswego. As a hint of the su- pernatural always awakens interest, your correspondent pas made inquiry into the matter, feeling that if Oswego Centre can substantiate her elaims to a lively ghost, it-would add to her attractions.' There is certainly no more desirable location for a ahost in this part of the state. Owinq; to the marshy nature of the ground, it is difficult to enter the swamp. The road but wide enough for one team, is built of logs and covered witli dirt. By permission I will give the experi- ence of two townsman, only adding there a\ others with like experiences, whose nam^s mi \-lit be mentioned, and that these gentleman do not attribute it v to sn - Deniiu.ril causes. S'me six weeks ago M. .T. Daly, of Southwest Oswego, was dnving ihrouuli the swamp in the evening when, without notice, his horse stopped, n^t r gardins repeated applieatiousof the wlrp ofh»r than snort. Getting out of \the carriage, he attempted to lead the horse, but without success, and not until he had twice l.-ft buggy and after repeat- ed whippings could he start the animal, and fion it ran with him to Mr. Pasko's on-i mil» d'stant. Mr. G. W. Baker, of Oswego Centre, has had i like experience. At such a time there are always strange stories in circulation. Here is one from a respon- sible partv, although doubtless, arising from a disordered imagination. This p 'rty, a lady and Kentleman, were driving through fbe \dismalswanip one evening when their hoaS'e stopped, and looking tonth they saw, or sav +hey saw, a female figure kneeliug by the side of a coffin. The appnration appeared to be robed in some li<dit colored material. The whole scene was made visible by a dim light. Two or three years ago a party of hun- ters one niadit saw a man with a spade come out of tlie swamp, get into aif open wacron and drive rapidly away. Since tlie above mentioned occurrences it is of course snrmiced that the man had brought a murdered victim there for bur- ial. Perhaps it was nothing more than a polecat; possibly it was his mother-in- law, whom he had slain in self-defense, and who. owing to the hardness of her nature, has been deposited in that place two years before her ghost could disem- body itself. Your correspondent drove through this swamp about 8 o'clock one evening, and again between tlie hours of twelve and one, but escaped unharmed. It has been said \there is no effect with- out a cause;\ having told the effect we leave it to our philosophical readers to determine the cause.
