If you have ever met, reader, in your traveling, with a garrulous old woman, whose tongue it was wholly impossible to -keep from running' all the while,, you wilt laugh, as we have laughed, at the annexed sketch of a New England stage coach company. The extract may seem a little long at first—but never mind that, you will think it too short when you are through with it. The day was remarkably fine.— Our z - oad lay along the pleasantest part of the Jlousatonic; our cattle were sleek and well-looking; the driver was civil and respectably clad while the coach itself was a miracle of comfort. In the midst of this prospective and present enjoyment, an elderly lady with a monstrous bandbox, a paper-covered trunk, and a little girl, are stowed away in the coach. And here began our tribula- tions. .Before getting in, however, the lady sung out: \Driver do you know Deacon Hitchcock V \.No ma'am,\ was his rejjly; \ I've only driv on this rout a fort- night. •' I wonder if neither of them gen- tlemen there don't know him,\ said she, X-ioMng her head into the vehi- cle, and looking on- our side. \ I don't,\ said one, whom we shall designate as the wag, \ but I know Deacon Hotchkiss very well, madam., if he will answer your purpose.\ \ Well aint either of them, other gentlemen acquainted with him V No reply. \ Well, then, I dont know wheth- er to get in or not,\ said the lady ; \ 'cause I must see Deacon Hitch- cook afore I go home. I am from the State of .New Hampshire, and Deacon Hitchcock was a particular friend of my husban's this little girl's father, who has been dead now two years, and I'd like to see him 'mazin- iv. \ Does he live about here V \ Well, I don't know that, for cer- tain,\ said she; \ but he lives some- where in the State of Connecticut. I live in New Hampshire, and this is the first time I was ever so far from home. It's dreadful unpleas- ant. And I feel a little dubersome about riding all alone in a stage with gentlemen I never saw afore, \ 0, never fear, the gentlemen won't hurt you,*' exclaimed the dri- ver. \ Well, perhaps they won't—but it's dreadful unpleasant for aiadyto remainder of tlie regiment are to em camp just back ot the fort. It is built on a commanding position and will mount some ten guns or more, and ig said to be one of the best for- tifications along the line. It has been' named Port Morgan in honor of the G-OYernoi' of our State. After some delay our regiment is-; now. complete, in the lineoi field of- fieers, and the iblowing officers have' ;received ..their commissions: JT, E. Lord, pi-Brownville, Odteiiel.; Brad- ley \Winslow of W&tertowa, Lit-a- teliaiitCol; John Q. Todd, of ISad- ison county, Major. These.appoint- ments ftre good' ones,, and the niea are well suited for their several posi- tions ; and what is better still, the men have all confidence in them— which had not been the ease before the change in the field officers took place. Our regiment is in a. brigade comprised of the 12th,, 23d, 25th and 35thregiments N. Y. S, V., under command of General Waclsioorth.— Tinder this old and experienced G-en. the regiment hopes to render a good account of itself if called into action. Our brigade was reviewed by Major G-en. McOlellan and staff, Brig. G-en. McDowell, President Lincoln and Secretary Seward on Monday last.— Two brigades were reviewed upon the same field, situated near Long Bridge. After being, drawn up iu line of battle, President Lincoln and Secretary Seward rode along the line in an open carriage, with uncovered heads, followed by McOlellan, Mc- Dowell, and other officers of high rank. The sight was truly an im- posing one. As I gazed upon these distinguished men, upon whom thou- sands of patriots throughout the loy- al States look for'^iveranoe in this the i\ation'&kour of trial and dan- ger—when I considered how. arduous are the duties this rebellion has heaped upon them as the main string of the government—and as I further thought how important an. era the present ysar will be in the history of. the )Yo4d, I could-but utter a heart- felt'prayer to Him that rules over, the -losiiinaes of mis immense un> yerse s that he would give them wis- dom and strength sufficient to guide our glorious shin \of Sta±e-«*fely waj from,: M&jf^'+Sy.'' Therehave been a goOd many cases of the fever,, but, only -two have died. The sudden change of climate is the probable cause of it. The war neWs with us has been uninteresting of late, aside from a little skirmishing by our pic- kets and an expected attack on otir ; lines, which does not alarm us much, believing, as we do, that fortified as. we are all along our lines,, we can re- pel any attack mad upon us by the rebels.' Last night, after dress-par-. ade, our adjuclant pulled out another; paper from his belt—all wondering what that meant—and readthe news of the gallant victory of our forces on the coast of North Carolina! Quite a sensation was created yes- terday by the report that General, Mansfield was in irons for betraying the confidence McOlellan placed in him, by informing the rebel leaders of an intended attack upon their lines. How true this report may be I can- not say; but it is currently reported and generally believed. One of our regiment has just been brought in from picket-duty-, having received a musket shot in his leg by; a fire of rebel pickets.
