LOCKPORT'S WATER ELECTION THE 57% Big Meeting at Hodge Opera House Is Strongly in Fa- vor ot Power Com- pany's Proposi- tion. (Special Dispatch to the Evening News.) LOCKPORT, Dec. 81.-There was a rousing meeting at the Hodge Opera House Thursday night, lasting until midnight, to consider the water supply and power canal proposition to be voted on next Thursday, The Magara, Lockport & Ontario Power Co. proposes to furnish water from the Niagara River at 2 cents per 1000 gallons. Hon. . M. Ashley was chairman. Favoring the water proposition were (George B. Thompson, Hon, P. F. King, Charles F. Foley, Frank B. Seeley, Frank Cochran, A. T. Hopkins and others, Mr. Ashley is the largest realty owner in the city, having built £00 hew houses here in the past six years. He spoke emphatically for an. vote on Thursday. He thought Lock- port had everything to gain and noth- ing to lose, and that the water contract would guarantee the power canal to Lockport, would furnish the city with pure water at a reasonable cost and would give the city an Industrial boom 'mt least as great as that enjoyed by Niagara Falls, Hon, P. F. King, a director in the power company, reviewed the history of the past 15 years' attempts to float the power canal enterprise. He had several things to say regarding the op- position of the Niagara Falls com- panles to the Lockport project, and about enemies of the enterprise living In Lockport Itself, He was frequently interrupted by applause, He said: \The proposition upon which you are to vote, embraces the construction of the canal to Lockport. Buffalo, MANY VACANT - SEATS IN SCHOOLS, Estimated That the Total Num- ber of Cases in the City . - - This Month ig ' 2000. Buffalo has on its hands a moasles epi- demic surpassing in extent any known in the history of the city. In the first 3 days of the month just closing 1140 cases have been reported to the Health Depart- ment. 'The dally average is 40 cases, Just before the schools closed for the Christ-, mas holidays some were sadly depleted of pupils. In some classrooms the ab- sencu. due to measles was betwen 10 and L0 per cent Peuple generally knew there was more meusles than usual In the city, but few outside the Health Department wre aware of the widespread effect of the disease. As a rule the cases are light, but many necessitate the absence of a child from school from a week to a fortnight. In two of the schools the number of cuses of measles reported in December was over t. This report does nut include the week just closed, which would tend {n Increase the number at least a quar- er. An Indication of the effect measles Is having in the schools cam be gained from the following table, which shows the number of pupils Ill Schools with less than a dozen cases are not reported:; No. 1, 44 cases; No. 4, 17 cases; No. , 16 cases; Nn 1, 247 cases; No. 8, 45 cases; No. 9, 18 cases; No. 16, 24 cases, No. 19, 12 casos; No. 24, 14 cases; No. 25, 18 cnses; No. 28, B cases; No. 31, 28 cases; No. 84, 20 cases; No 37, O) cuses; No. 88, 30 cases; No. 39, ® cages, No 41, 25 cases, No. 44, 34 cases, No 47, I® cases; No 48, 13 cases; No. 49, #I eases; No 50, 24 cases; No. 56, 27 cases; No. Ul, 14 cases. In the Central High School there was one cure and in the Masten Park High School there were five cases The pri- vite und lnmvhlul schools fure the same as the public schools, but as In most of these there are fewar scholars the num- ber of cuses reported is smaller, \The numerous cases of measles re- ported have made it necessary for us to open new pages on our record books for several schnols,\ sald Dr. Gram, who has charge of the vital statistics of the Health Department. \The epidemic surely ls more extensive than we have had In years.\ In the month of November the reports of measles were numerous. equalling near- ly the previous ten months of the year, byt the total was nowhere near so large as this month's will he. The total of cases reported In November was 728. This month it will be nearly double that num- er,. Not all the cases nf this disease are re- ported to the Health Department,. ne many people think medical attendance unnecessary for a alight attack of measles und so the department never gets a rec- ord of the caso. It is probable 2000 would bo nearer the correct uumber of cadets In the clty thin the number reported to the health officials.
