Yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock, William Vickers of the Slaton road, . went to the Hall Iron Works to get a threshing, engine which he had Jeff there to be fixed, and take it to the a stone crusher of C. N. Stainthorpe & Co. He started up steam and ram the engine out into the niiddle of Market Street, and thn upon the new iron Exchange Street bridge, where the trolley line crosses the canal.. Some who saw Mr. Vickers start up said he was drunk, but still sober enough to run thewengine. When on the top of the bridge which is- 30 feet above the canal, Vickers must have gotten dizzy, and turned the steer- ing wheel in the wrong direction, send- ing the three ton engine against the irom hand railing at the side of the bridge. With the heavy load pressing on it the railing gave way, but not till Mr. Vick- ers saw the position he was in and' checked the engine. 'The front wheels . went over the side of the bridge, and had the engine not been: stopped it would have been at the bottom-of the canal.> Men this morning worked two { hours to get it back on the middle of\ the bridge. A new State law, pertaining to church affairs, changes in a radical way some things in connection with the Episcopal From time immemorial, al- most, the begining of the church year, has dated from Easter, and the church elections have taken place on Easter Monday, but under the new law the fis- cal year beging with Advent, and Ad- vent Monday instead of Easter Monday becomes the election time. Each parish may choosé either three, six, or nine vestrymen, one third of the vestrymen | to be elected for one year, one third for : two years, and one third for three years. After this year one third of the vestry- men will be elected annually., The adop- tion of this Iqw by the parishes of the diocese of New York State is not obliga- tory, but all or nearly all of the parishes in the diocese of Western New York have voted to change their elections in conformity with the law, and it is be- lieved that all in other dioceses of the: State will do so. . no t In accordance with this new law the election of the vestrymen of Grace Church will take place next Monday.
