Votes to Sever Connection With Supreme Body. Boston, Nov. 18.—The grand lodgo of Massachuetts of the Ancient Ordor of United Workmen, ban adopted n resolution to sevor all connection with the supreme lodge of the United States. In' attendance at the meeting were also several membors of the director- ate of the supreme lodgo, Including H. R. Dickinson, Suprenip Recorder, of Buffalo, N. Y. Representative John Symonds of Lynn, presented the resolution, tho purport of which was that the grand lodge should pay the guaranty de- manded by the national body, up tJ and including Dec. 31, 1903, after which all connection with the supreme ledge should cease. After several efforts were made on the part of the supreme lodge officers tu have the resolution changed or reconsidered the resolution was adopted 36G to 119. After the meeting the board of di- rectors of the supreme lodgewill carry the matter into the courts, if necess- ary in ordor to compel the Massachu- setts lodge to live up to its contract with the national body. . Application For Recount of Votes, Kingston, N. T., Nov. 18.—Applica- tion will be made to Judge Howard at Troy on Saturday by Joel Brink for s mandamus directing a recount of the ballots cast at Bddyville polls of the town of Ulster at the recent elec- tion. Brink was the Republican can- didate for supervisor against Henry McNamee, who has held that office 15 7ears. The returns Indicated Brink's election until the Eddyvilie poll re- turns came In, which gave McNamee 1 majority in the town. Brink charges that the tally sheet bears evidence of having been tampered with. Reciprocity With Canada. Ottawa, Ont, Nov. 18.~It is offi- cially stated that no overtures have lately been made to Canada for reci- procity with the United States. Sen- ator Fairbanks wrote to Sir Wilfrid Laurier last Spring with the object of having the Joint high commission reassemble, but was told that nothing could be done tnitil the Canadian par- liament had prorogued. A general attack is expected within the next few days. General \Wos y Gil refuses to capitulate, and St is be- lieved ' that the fighting will he so- vere. The situation la desperate and fighting in the streets is likely to oc- cur at any moment. The United States cruiser Baltimore has been compelled to leave to ro- coal. United States Minister Powell la endeavoring to protect American in- terests with the limited means a t his disposal. A German naval vessel is ready to land troops at a moment's notice. The insurgents endeavored to have Minister Powell rocognlzo them, but this the minister rofused to do. } The revolutionists fired on tho Clyde line steamer New York as alio was entering the \port of Samana. The vessel was uninjured. The Dominican government has ap- pointed Minister ot Foreign Rela- tions Galvan and Judge Gray as com- missioners to arbitrate tho Santo Do- mingo Improvement matter, as tho result of Minister Powell's determin- ation to compel'the carrying out of tho terms of the protocol. New York, Nov. 18.—Sentence was suspended on Clarence M. Leonard the 18-year-old youth of Bast Orange N. J., who was recently apprehendet in Vancouver, B. Elmira, Nov. 18.—Despite the opti- mistic hopes of the New York state reformatory officials, the diphtheric epidemic seems to make progress at that institution. Three new cases developed since Monday night and that notwithstanding the fact that every Inmate in the institution has been lnnoculated with anti-toxin ser- um for a week.
