Signer,, at Albion, last Thursday afternoon, and completed their organization by the election of the following officers: President, John J. Ryan of Medina; vice ^^^^SWt^Wim^M jHolley; secretary, Frederick M. Thompson of .Albion; executive committee, A. L. Swett of Medind, Chas, G. Porter of Albion and Frank Moore of Hulberton, The organizatiqtt'prsgoses to* hn- mediately commence an educational campaign as to the benefits. to be derived from the barge canal by the county of Orleans. By reason of the rain, the debalje advertised to be held at the. county fair-did not take place, but Hon, Henry B. Hebert, chairman of the QTia(tor-|sfe% : !^k^naTbommittee and president of the Produce Ex- change, who was to have spoken in favor of improved canals, was in- duced to remain over, until Friday evening when a meeting was held at the Court House at Albion. A num- ber of largo shippers and represen- tative citizens from various parte of JJU county-wore present. Mr. Ryan was elected chairman of tlio meeting, and on taking the chair, answered one of the argu- ments of the opponents of the pres- ent project, who claim to be in favor of tho construction o,f the im- proved canal by tho Federal govern- ment, by referring to Vol. 5, pago 132 of MeMnster's History/of the United Statea, and showing there- from, that the eamo plea was made at tho time of the construction of tho original canal; that a law was passed in 1810 by tho State of New York designating Governeur Morris, Stevon Van Rensselear, DoWltt Clinton, Simeon DoWitt, Win Tims Eddy, Poter D. Porter, Robert R. lavijjgaton and Robert •Fulton, as a committee tqjiecltte the [aid of the Federal government and' of the various States in the original constrnctjo^pHhe canal. That this distinguished committee labored long and faithfully iwder- to secure, such atsstytance; that -New Jersey' atiswered' \uo Verjnont postponed action, Michi- gan territory answered \not by that [route;\ that the Congress of United States answered \no;\ that some congressmen -thought the scheme too vast for even the United States to undertake, and some were jealous pf NejpJjTprJt} that memorials were presented to Congress for the con- struction of the Chesapeake, Dela- ware, Union and many other canals, as a condition of- constructing the Erie canal, and that in the end \New York received nothing.\ That this distinguished commit- tee, however, reported back to the Legislature the recommendation that New York proceed to borrow money and construct the work alone. Mr. A. L. Swett of Medina was then called on, and stated that the moulding sand used by the mould- ers in Medina, come by canal boat, from Saratoga county, and that the difference in. freight rates between shipping that material alone by canal, from that charged by thorml- roadp, effects a saving of many thpnsand dollars to the iron inter- ests of Medina; that his own saving in.this respect is more than one thousand dolhi's a year. He further stated that Buffalo and Charlotte are practically the same distanco fiom Medina, but canal competition is afforded from Buf- falo, while there is nono from Char- lotto; that, by reason of this canal competition, a rate nf 40c. per t/w for pig iron is obtained from Buf- falo, while 70c. per Ion has been paid from Charlotte! nnd Ire jmve it as his opinion that, if tho bnr«o cnnal proposition is not voted in November, nnd tho esmnl is closed, ns the Governor of tboSiato recently said at Buffalo it would have to be,i unless improvod, all of tho iron interests at Medina, nnd along the line of tho canal, would be destroyed. He stated that the Central Foun- dry Company, of which ho is a director^.would hot, and; could not, .maintain ha plant. at Medina, if.it Were not fqt* the favorable freight rates obtained by. reason of the- cana'l. lion. Wva; ir $. Phipps of Eagle Harbor, Ex.-#,ember of the Assetfl-r bly, was Called on, and stated'' that* lie is an extensive manufacturer and dealer in phosphates, which he sells : to the farmers of Orleans County; that most of ]the Ingredients whjih ; go into the \manufacture of coramer? cm! phosphate ar,j obtained from New York City,. >and adjoining cities in New Jersey; thftfc the freight rates on these materials by canal are (nly 70c per ton, while by railroad, the rate isp.dOpei short ton; that these materials are used by manufacture's of phosphate Jri Western New York generally, andjiire now tsbipped by canal; that, in his judgment, if the canal were closed on these article, the farmers'of Orleans County would he obliged to pay not less than $30,- 000.00 a year more, by reason of the increased rates on this one article, if shipped by rail. That the sav- ing in rates, in the business tran- sacted by himself alone ia' from $12,000.00 to $14;0OO,0Q yearly aud would, have to be added to the pres- ent charge to the farmer, . Mr. Hebert then addressed the meeting, and proceeded to show that what was true locally,\ was true all over the State. Ho cited facts and figures, showing that not only New York City, but New York State, was fast losing its commercial supre- macy, and losing its advanced posi- tion in manufacturers, by ie.isou of the deterioration and approaching closing of the Erie Cautd, unh-si improved; that mauy ships hereto- fore running to New York City hud' been taken off, and are now running to other ports; and that not only Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and New Port News, are gaining, at the expense of New York, but that a large portion of the traffic which heretofore passed through New York, is now passing through the Domin- ion of Canada, by reason of tho faci that Canada has improved her canals, whereas New York has done nothing in this respect for nearly a half century. + Do called attention to the great lino of cities nnd villages built up along tho Erio canal and Hudson river, as compared with those nloiiK the liue of the railroad in Southern Now York; and ho stated that the fanners are far more interested in maintaining the prosperity of these cities. ai»d villages a$ L Jiptnev and SQ, .pjauttalningtb«--hpi^ j ;%r|t^;J*ftft afchef arei t.any qweBfiti^^lijqiijpefi' tSon with fariners'Of•tlie/^lfc >-'.;, •' He stated: that-t.|je'|tf|5'F'||p!B;'\4^ : are todajr obtained- Smiti ; tlfe-V^I^V l^ereTgiun.-andara-sjMjpe^^ejnjy^: :by water'transportat%n ; ''t6\ 'Kpltalo;*;: that it was by ronson of this fact and the expected improvemehf/of the-Erie canal that the^ ^OiQW/w. steel plant is now being b.ui|t at Buffalo; that all along; the line '$ the improved «uml the iron indus- try will spring into itew Itfeyvlig, reason of cheap freight rates'for Hie raw, material and cheap, rates for the finished products,, to the great city of.
