Major DeJmar Failed to Equal Lou Dillon'* or Hfs Own Record. < Readvllle, Mass., Sept. 15.—-Although veather and track conditions we're deal Major Delrriar failed to beat Lou Dillon's two minute record yesterday, principally through poor itacemakmg. The gelding with the assistance of an auto for the first half and running horse in the second, covered the mile in '2:00%. After scoring three times, the horse' was sent aiway with the auto slightly behind on the outside. The quarter was made ia 30%. At three-eighths pole a runner started in. and the half was made In 1:00%. The auto also continued to pace. The three-quarters was trotted in 1:30% and everything looked bright for the smashing of the two minute mark when the runfcer fal- tered slightly and McDonald ' was forced to pull Up a hit, losing a full second, It Is believed. After the ef- fort McDonald said that he believed Major Delmar could beat two rhiiiutes. Favorites won the races, the 1 only contest being in the 2:07 pace between Major C. and Locanda. After stoutly denying any complicity in the affair,, he was finally made to see the folly of trying to further dlony the charge and made, a clean breast of the matter, tolling where tho money-\Vaa hid. and giving com- plete details of tho orittie. Ho took the officers to the place where the plunder'was concealed, which %vas' in a stone wall near Culver's ice house, when he uncovered the stones and took out a salt Back containing $449.1)6—all of tho money stolen. Ho was-inunodiateiy placed under arrest and taken fo the lockup \and later was taken before(Justice Brain- ard, where ho waived examination and was held for the grand Jury on jthe charge of grand larceny. ' Last evening he waa taken before Jndge Simonds who placed his bail at $1,500, which was furnished by his parents, and he was allowed to go home with them. Tho case is a peculiarly sad one.for the young man, who has hitherto borne a good reputation, and also for his parents, who are highly re- spectable people residing near East Shelby, and they have tho universal sympathy of tho, entire community in this unfortunate affair. Brown can ascribe no reason for his action in the matter and his most intimate friends ore firm in the belief that he committed the crime when his mind was temporarily unbalanced.
