They were bnllt of brick and were about 10 feet high. One of the magazines was. Clarendon Gtvcdwin. the foreman of the men who were loading the pow- der, and Amadee Boulonger, one of his assistants, were not killed by the explosion. Tbe latter. In explaining the cause of the explodcn said that the men found that a can of nitro glycerine In trie magazine was leaking^ Mr. Goodwin picked <sp what he thought was a jug of water and began pouring it on- the nitro glycerine. As soon as the fluid from the jug struck the floor, he found that it wasfnitric acid. The floor at once began to smoke, i The men rushed from* the building, but had not gone 10 feet when the explosion occurred. This explosion was 1 followed immediately by an ex- plosion of the gunpowder in the 'three teams, and several seconds later by the second magazine. The entire catastrophe occurred Within Ave seconds, but\ in that time the surrorunding property was\ swept as if a small volcano had broken forth In its midst. Every house within 200 yards col- lapsed: Trees were blown down, the grass within X00 yards was mowed as if by a lawn mower, while bricks from' the two magazines were hurled fir across the river and all over the neighborhood.
