Shortly beforo midnight Charles Gibbs applied at the residence of W. B. Kingsley, corner West avenue and Warren street3, r for a key .to tho fire alarm box at that comer. He sent in an alarm and before, tho depart- Iment arrived sent in two succeeding alarms. When the firemen arrived they could discover no fire, and Gibbs, volunteered to show them where it was. -The barn had been set on fire in two different places, and a few pails of water soon subdued the flames. * ' When officer Parker arrived at the ure.Cliifif Engineer Gallagher order- ed hirn^to arrest Gibbs On suspicion of being the incendiary. He was brought to the lockup, where he was. searched. Nothing was found on his person and when questioned by a JOURNAL reporter, admitted taming in the alarm, bat when plied with further questions as to What he was doing in that locality at mid- night replied that \information could be purchased by the pound'further down the street.\ Officer Parker called the JOURNAL reporter's atten- tion to the smell of kerosene on Gibbs' hands, which was very dis- tinct. This morning he was questioned at length and made a statement to Justice Brainard, denying the charge. He will be given a further hearing this afternoon and will, in all probability, be held to await the action of the grand jury., ' The prisoner's reputation as a fire fiend fe rather notorious, having been arrested for that offense several times. He has been convicted and served time in Elmira reformatory, from which institution he was parolled. A farce, with clever situations and fun as clear as crys- tal, without a suggestive phrase, is certainly' a novelty, and to this \Hunting for Hawkins\ owes its popularity. The story is ingenious and interesting, relating tho troub- les of two young lovers, kept apart fay a haughty mother, who, proud of her social connections, declares her daughter can marry only a learned man, patronized By the \smart set,\ Hawkins, a newly made benedict, agrees to pose as an eminent litera- teur and uncle to the young lover.
