Jeanne Bodin and Bonnie Mitelman's \Mothers Who Work\ (Ballantine, $5.95, paper) supports - albeit inadvertently - - the increasingly heard conten- tion that the real benefictar- ies of the women's move- ment may be men. The authors, themselves working mothers, sent hun- dreds of questionnaires to women across the country and then followed up with in-depth interviews with 25 of the respondents. Their book is a compilation of interview excerpts and anal- is. ys The major points that the authors seem to want to make are that working is an economic necessity for women and that the children of these two-working-parent households do not suffer, but rather become more inde- ASTRO: GRAPH Bernice Bede Osol June 1, 1983 You will move through the ranks more rapidly In the year following your birthday If you consistently add to knowledge pertaining to your chosen fisld of endeavor. But upon completing this book, one is left with the opposite message. Few of the women interviewed talk about economic impera- tives. Most mention their self-esteem, the importance of feeling that they are a person in their own right and not just somebody's wife or mother. Most work with their husbands' blessings. .Why not? The women's salaries mean one being able to afford a fancier car or a steeper mortgage. Only 19 percent of the respondents said that their husband would prefer them to be full-time wives and moth- ers. This isn't surprising. For all we read about husbands and wives sharing child care and household responsibili- ties, the respondents to this survey said they are still doing it all ~ and bringing home part of the bacon to boot. For men, that's a pret- ty good arrangement. For the emotional (and physical) health of women and chil- dren, well, perhaps it's not cod. §0 & Ninety-five percent of the women who answered this questionnaire took care of household management, 90 percent took care of meal preparation, 70 percent took care of house cleaning, 93 percent did the marketing, 78 percent did the lam) 70 percent were responsi for child care, 97 percent resolved family problems, 84 percent arranged for children's lessons and spe- clal activities. On top of all that, 81 percent of the wom- en took care of m household finances such as wing the mortgage and ancing the checkbook. This is liberation? If the babysitter doesn't show up one morning, if the school calls that the child is sick, it's mom who hustles to find another sitter or who dashes out of a business meeting to pick up the sick child, call the doctor and rack her brain to fig- ure out how to both care-for the child and meet job responsibilities. On the cover of \Mothers Who Work\ is the question, \How -are they. juggling their careers, their families, and their mal lives?\ The answer, based on the authors' sample - although this is not a conclusion the uthors reach - seem$ to \Not very well.\ But then 99 percent of working moms are not superwomen. The authors include suggestions for making mom's life a bit easier - such as flex-time or on-site corporate day care. But the pivotal discus gion -- which you won't find in this book -- is why have so many women fallen into the trap of thinking that raising children fall-time is not work, is not challenging? Why are they still baying the early {mm ? mother\ claptrap ¥ do so many women expect so much of themselves (and their childrea) and so little of their busbands? Romania, though smaller PITHollyw. HOLLYWOOD i alibi—Dog marrifige ésexualit quotient of a imovie: glamour girl or male hunk? It's a rhetorical question, to ~ be sine, wogmlzl'obamy of no - great sociol consequence. But the answer does illuminate changes in Hollywood Hifstyles over the years. In the very old days of the film colony, during the teens and 20s and even into the '308, many a glamour girl lost her aura of virginal desirability when she took a husband, losing in the process her box- office allure as well as, one supposes, her innocence. Some actors and actresses were secretly married, afraid of losing their following among fans if the news ever came out. Francis X. Bushman was one such. In many cases, stars refused to acknowledge their children, fearful that parenthood would , detract from their standing as | sex symbols. Today, in a society which Hollywood helped liberate, it appears the marital status of sex symbols, male or female, matters not a whit to those given to mooning over screen idols. Availability, then, of a sex symbol is not 'a' serious} * \Consideration to the smitten fan - %d with. People probably are more comfortable with their dreams than reality when it comes to sex symbols. Perhaps because movie gods and goddesses are so remote from the reality of most people's lives their marital status is immaterial and inconsequential.
