The - aircraft carried - 36 pasengers and a crew of four. The man pointed the rifle at Capt. Ralph Young and co-pilot Walter Gowans and told them to call the Alice Springs control tower, the airline said. | Then, the airline said, he told the pilots he wanted a light aircraft and a parachute ready for him when the aircraft landed. He made no other demands, the spokesman said. Shortly after the F27 touched down, the man allowed all the women passengers and one stewardess to disembark but kept one stewardess, the two pilots and 12 male passengers aboard. - During a series of conversa- tions with officials and police, the airline said, the man told them he wanted a plane to fly him to a remote point about 300 miles west of Alice Springs. The aircraft taxied around the Alice Springs runway for nearly two hours as the man argued with police. | A light aircraft with a parachute in the- passengers seat was rolled out onto the air strip. CASSTTED ADSTZZZYT Franklin Letters Sold NEW YORK (UPI) - Several letters in which Benjamin Franklin disgcussed his work in electricity were sold Tuesday for $2,500. | The letters were written be- tween 1751-3 and addressed to a \Mr. P. Collinson of London,\ said a spokesman for Sotheby- Parke Bernet auction house, which sold the letters. Franklin said in one letter that he was doing \important work in electricity, proving that lightning is electrical and deciding the positive and nega- tive nature of an electrical charge,\ the spokesman said. The letters were part of a $136,460 one - day sale of 432 American books, diaries and sheet music from the 16th Cen- tury to the present. The oldest item was a diary dated 1542 and written by a member of a Spanish expedi- tion through Florida, on the Mississippi River and then over- land through Texas to Califor- nia. That was brought by War- ren Howell, a San Francisco : book dealer, for $9,500. A 20-volume collection of the works of Edward Curtis, a turn- of-the-century American photog- rapher and historian of North American Indians, was the most recent work sold.
