I MEDINA JOURNAL-REGISTER WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1972 Gary Crosby waits that call to big time. By \ ERNON SCOTT UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLY K OOP (LPI -- Gary Crosby, Bing's eldest, is happy with his recurring role as a cynical cop in \Adam-12\ but is prey to actor's telephonitis. He has one ear tuned to the telephone awaiting that «call from his agent or a producer beckoning him for a major role in a motion picture or perhaps a television series of his own. Gary is a shade below mediam height, his hair is thinning and his speaking voice reminiscent of his father's. But by any gauge Gary is his own man. | He and his wife Barbara have been married a dozen years. They have a son by her previous marriage, Steven 17, who is in his junior year of high school. They live in a ramshackle, two bedroom house in the comfortable Benedict Canyon area. The house has servant's quarters, but the Crosbys are servantless. - There is a feeling of solidity about the house and furnishings. The house fjon't new and a few repairs are needed here and there, but Gary still isn't sure which end of the hammer to use. . \i'm not a fixer-upper,\ said Gary, \not since Barbara saw me tip over a can of paint on the living room carpet.\ Garv. 39, chafes at inactivity. But as a free-lance actor he finds ~ himself with houts, days and weeks in which he is not gainfully employed. Athletic To fill the time Crosby has become almost a full-time athlete. He plays baseball in three different leagues three days a week - triple A softball. He spends two hours on Mondays and Thursdays play ing basketball at a local high school with 10 to 1 2 friends. But his real passion is tennis. Gary plays several times a week and enters pro-am | and | celebrity tournaments all over Southern California. He's competitive and in top condition. Part of his devotion to sports is Gary's dedication to the battle of the buige, Barbara is a fantastic cook whose speciality is Italian dishes. tiary peed only look at pasta to gain weight. - H» and Barbara have three dogs, a terrier named Silky, a white poudie thes eall \ enous and a i Belgian shepherd, Thor, wih kéi'ff‘ih pronxh—‘h dwWat. Aside from traveling to tennis tourneys. the Crosbys are not socially oriented. They have a few friends in from time to. time for dinner and a poker game - {un, not money. Gary doesn't see very much of his famous father who makes his home in a suburb of San Francisco. Neither is he close to his brothers. Lind=ay. Dennis and Philip. \I see Dennis now and then.\ says Gary, \He's in the fish business in Mexico. But, I don't know, my other brothers are busy with their own lives and Um doing the best I can.\ Gary dislikes leay ing town for any length of time because it means the telephone is unguarded. Recently he landed a co-starring role in the television movie, \The Sandeastles.\ He would yerv much like to appear in more such shows. \The important thing is to hang in there and keep your spirits up.\ Gary says. a note of cheerfulness in his voice. 1 AAA pune rane an tete etate) a a a e e 250502000 aca- ece .................... --c-u.o.nrho-l...notch-IQIOOCDQIO‘OCOQQUI . a a aa o \or reste ne nees .’,‘.'.‘-’.‘-'.‘.‘-'.'.'.\\'.'.\\.\0-0‘l.~.-'-'~'u.-'p.-.-'.'.'.'-.o'....-.-°o'u'-.o'-.a.o.rtt:3:0:n:t:o:utn’.:.:020:0:.:0_0:.:._.’..I.I..... .o9.0.0.oJ.0...l.‘...0.‘.'.“..°. a te 00020000000\ 4T HOME WITH Stiller and Meara By JOAN O'SULLIVAN SOME entertainers are so cel- ebrated that first-name mention suffices-Zsa Zsa, Barbra, Liza, Liz. It's the other way around for the hottest comedy team in no idea what their first names are. \I'm Anne,\ said Meara as she ushered me into_their New York apartment and introduced Stiller. \This is my husband, show biz. They're so well known by their last names, Stiller and Meara, that many people have Jerry.\ fi‘he algartmght, seven rooms with a river view on Riverside 1. Stiller and Meara rehearse Dr. Fluthers routine. He: ~\DOr. Fluthers (sob, sob) I'm, I'm a shut-in.\ 2. She: \Speak up, sir. What is your problem?\ He:; \I don't want to ory but it's terrible here.\ 3. She: \You're a shut-in! . Try and get out and join _ | some kind of club.\ He: ~: \They won't let me.\ i 4. She: \Please speak up, sir. What are you doing now?\ He: Ten to 20 [m in the pen.\ Television notes NEW YORK (UPI) - Has any new-and still unproven- series ever achieved cover exposure on TV Guide _ as quickly as CBS' “Bridget oves -_ Bernie,\ which remiered only * two - weeks fore this relative of \Abie's Irish Rose\ was given the big break? It is to ponder! Jim Henson's Muppets will be part of the Perry Como special on CBS Dec. 6. Henson will present some new puppets as well as the familiar Muppetts of \Sesame Street.\ A forthcoming made-for- video movie, \Tenafly one of NBC's **World Premiere\ films, has James McEachin playing a black private investigator - involved in the murder of the wife of a controversial talk-show host. Feb. 11 is the date for a 90- minute CBS special | titled \Duke Ellington .,.,. We Love You Madly.\ The note musician will appear on the show along with a couple of dozen stars paying tribute to his talent as a composer and orchestra leader during a career that began in 1916. Hosts for the annual New York City. Thanksgiving (Macy) parade on NBC Nov. 23 will be Joe Garagiola, Lorne Greene and Betty White, who are no strangers to such an assignment. Don Rickles, the comedian who puts down everyone with his cutting comments, is the star of a CBS special scheduled for Dec. 12. Guests will be comedienne Anne Meara, dancer-singer - Juliet Prowse and Harvey Korman of \The Carol Burnett Show.\ Jack Gaver Drive, was just decorated. \you should have seen this place last week,\ Anne said. \It looked like the bombing of Dresden.\ Airy Char With its new decor, the apart- ment has the airy charm of a house. The living room is done in bright primary colors-green, yellow and blue. It's evident at a glance that there are children in residence. Their names, Amy and Benjie, label two of the chairs pulled up in front of the snack bar pass-through to the kitchen and also appear on aA pair of ornamental stained glass decorations that hang on twin windows overlooking the Hud- son and the Palisades. Amy is 10, Benjie's 6. \We call this Ed Sullivan's apartment,\ Anne said, because it was Ed who spotted them on their first big break, a Mery Griffin show, signed them for a guest spot on his own program and followed up with a contract for six really big shows a year. Since then they've been turn- ing up around the dial with great regularity. There's scarce- ly a variety show on TV that hasn't starred their comedy tal- ents. _ Commuters to The Coast Because most TV shows orig- inate in California, they chalk up a lot of air time back and forth to the coast. So why not make it simple and move West? \Because said Jerry, \there is no place quite as wonderful as New York. It's a friendly city.\ \California interrupted Anne, \is something else again. Do you know that they major in surfing at school? But between the ears there's a great waste- land.\ . The gpartment house they live in is a luxury co-0p in a neighborhood that was once fashionable but that now, like many areas of New York, has problems, but they are prob- lems that residents are trying to solve. \We belong to the block as- sociation,\ Jerry said. \We try to help as much as we can when we're in town. They're doing a great job.\ _- Let There Be Light The association solicited $5.00 contributions from everyone who lives on the block and used the money to put up daylight- bright street lights. Trees have been planted, too, and there are regular social events. \Like the Edgar Allen Poe block party,\ Anne said. \Did you know he used to live on aTe U Bo *s 20202000208 flying etetebs B o o k s [UPI] [Compiled by Publishers' Weekly] Fiction _ JONATHAN - LIVINGSTON SEAGULL - Richard Bach AUGUST 1914 - Alexander Solzhenitsyn THE WINDS OF WAR - Herman Wouk f DARK HORSE - Fletcher K nebel CAPTAINS AND THE KINGS - Taylor Caldwell oN THE NIGHT OF THE SEVENTH MOON - Victoria Holt THE WORD - Irving Wallace MY NAME IS ASHER LEV - Chaim Potok SEMI-TOUGH - Dan Jenkins REPORT TO THE COMMISSIONER - James Milis < Nonfiction I'M O.K., YOU'RE OK. - Thomas Harris ELEANOR: THE YEARS ALONE -Joseph P. They started out-and it may surprise some fans-as Shakes- peargean actors. \But we gave up the bard to make some bread,\ Anne said, \when we discovered that the ushers made more than we did.\ How long have they been married? \It's 18 years,\ Anne said, \but say 12-I'm Peter Pan.\ A Matter of Diet A 58\ Irish beauty with blue eyes and auburn hair, Anne ad- mits that dieting is something they both do. , \Yeah I'm, fat,\ said Jerry dolefully. \No you're not,\ his wife in- terrupted. \You just have a funny shape.\ Anne recently went on the Stillman diet., (\What did I get? Twenty pounds thinner, sour breath and cranky!\). Like so many things that happen to them, it turned into a comedy routine wherein Jerry, as \Dr. Spillman\ proposes a \feet off\ diet-so effective you lose much more than inches, you lose feet. Beauty routines? Anne doesn't have any. She has the beautiful translucent skin that often goes with auburn hair, and wears little makeup except \false lashes when I perform.\ Is she a good cook? \Why cook?\ said Anne. \They only eat it!\ In addition to their comedy act, both recently appeared in the hit play, \Last of the Red Hot Lovers.\ \I did all three female roles,\ said Anne. \That's called Pushy Irish.\ - New Recording Their current interest is a new record, \Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara-Laugh When You Like\ that will be out in time for Christmas sales. It features the Dr. Spillman diet bit as well as a hilarious take-off on Rhoda Blabbit, Hollywood commenta- tor. Occasionally, each goes his or her own way. Jerry created the role of Lance in \Two Gen- tlemen of Verona\ and Anne has made several movies, in- cluding \The Out-of-Towners\ and \Lovers and Other Stran- gers.\ But mostly they spend 24 hours of every day together. Too much? \No said Anne emphatical- 1y. \Every day is different, and that makes our lives exciting.\ Box -O-Chicken B Breast & leg Quarters, 8 ¢ Wings, Necks, FilLL E4L U WHERE ECONOMY ORIGINATES IMPORTANT ...
