PAULEY -_- FEATURE wRITER + Don’t writemf - Niagara Falls NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. ~ (UPI)-The magazine Modern Bride the other day proclaimed the honeymoon capital of the U.S.A. Is Niagara Falls going to hold still for this? Yes, at least for the time, says one spokesman for the city which for several generations has billed itself \the honey- . moon capital of the world.\ But not all is lost to Florida, by any - means. Although Niagara Falls has had its setbacks,. it is - \suddenly coming back. It's camp with the kids,\ says a spokesman for the bridal magazine. What happened to slow the flow of newlywed traffic to the Falls, of couples drawn by Nature's own spectacular spill- ing millions of tons of water hourly from the Niagara River rapids into Lake Ontario? ~ No Rail Service Walter G. Downey, a retired Army colonel who is executive vice president of the Niagara Falls, N.Y., Chamber of Com- merce, says transportation changes have been a major factor. \It became the capital when. couples came by train, stayed for a week or more,\ he said in an interview. But there is no longer rail service, he said, and regular commerclal airlines service is into nearby Buffalo _ and not the Falls. \No said Downey, \We're certainly no longer the honey- moon capital. But our hotels continue to advertise honey- moon suites. We still give honeymoon certificates. But ~ honeymooners are not our biggest business.\ Downey estimates that Niaga- ra Falls gets about $150 million dollars of the annual $3.5 billion that tourists spend yearly in . New York state, Families make up the largest percentage of the estimated five million visitors ¥. to the-U.S. side each year. Honeymoon Kit Offered It's the family visit more tos often than the honeymooners on the Canadian side too, which ‘wflladduptoanestlmatedlz million visitors this year, says Keith Milne, general manager of the Niagara Falls, Ont., Chamber of Commerce. Most visitors come by car or \not going to get many newlyweds | © traveling on a bus.\ The Canadian chamber ad- ' fvertlses regularly in brides' magazines and offers a honey- | moon kit which includes that honeymoon. certificate plus some free tickets, tour informa- . tion and such. You can write for it, or go by the. chamber offices and pick it up. Milne said so far this year, 10,379 couples had stopped in. The figure is only a fraction gher than in '71. I talked with commerce officials during a stopover my husband and I made on a motor tour of the Northeast this fall. | Downey graciously signed a marriage certificate for us. Urban Renewal Started It stated in part, \Congratu- lations to you both! May your marriage have the lasting beauty of Niagara Falls itself and may the feeling of fehclty which you share here inspire many-a-happy return to our honeymoon city ... Truth is, though, we were married 13 years ago and didn't honeymoon at Niagara. On the serious side of a city's comeback not only as a honeymoon site but in tourism, business and industry in general, Downey said the big hope lies in the massive renewal and rebuilding pro- gram the city has in the works for completion around 1976. _ Razing of many eyesores and honky-tonk structures already is done, the rebuilding is under \make us more beautiful,\ as Downey puts it. The multl-bllhon dollar pro- gram would make the Falls area a major convention and tourist center the year round.
