(UPID- Persons with emotional and behavioral problems may be taking their difficulties to a computer some day, rather than to the psychiatrist's couch. A recent experiment by scientists at Harvard and the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UBA) indicates computers can be programmed to \perform functions: similar to those of human psychologists and psychiatrists.\ - - A - small computer - was programmed to replace several \listening\ functions usually performed by human interview- ers in the experiment by Dr. Charles Slack, a consultant at UBA Medical Center, and his brother, Dr. Warner Slack, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard. In the experiment, young persons were hired to tell their troubles to both human and electronic listeners. Could Reduce Costs The Slacks say their study shows that for at least some, talking to a computer can be helpful. For others, they say the machine was actually preferable to a human thera- pist. However, the idea is not to replace humans in psychothera- py but to give them a néw tool and meet some of the problems caused by a shortage of professionals in the field. In many cases, the brothers believe the cost of therapy could be reduced. patients could be endangered by the intrusion of a| computer. But the brothers | say the experiments drew more praise than criticism after they were reported in a June issue of the New - England - Journal of Medicine. \The best psychiatrists and psychologists know | that the time they spend with each patient is limited,\ i Charles Slack. \T miles long. \If a computer help, most professionals are all for it.\ ._ Computer Talks The computer asks questions and ' talks to the patient by presenting words on a video screen. The patient responds by pressing keys on a typewriter- like keyboard and by speaking directly into a microphone. \The computer first asks a\ series of psychiatric questions in an attempt to tap emotional and behavioral problems such as depression, sex difficulties, insomnia, etc.,\ a UBA spokes- man. said,. \The computer stores the patient's answers to - the history questionnaire and 'remembers' them for later use.\ Aithough the computer \un- derstands\ the answers the patient feeds it through the keyboard, it does not under- NOTICE OF PROPOSED CHANGES IN TELEPHONE RATE SCHEDULES Notice is hereby given that the follow- ing proposed change in regulations been filed with the Public Service Com- mission to be effective September 1, 1972. Endorse _ Democrats NEW YORK - (UPD-Two unions with a. combined mem- bership of 460,000 Wednesday endorsed the Democratic ticket of Sens. George McGovern and Thomas Eagleton. Jacob Potofsky, president of the 385,000-member Amalga- mated Clothing Workers of America, said in announcing his union's endorsement - that \President Nixon has demon- strated a consistent disregard for the needs and aspirations of - working people.\ Leon J. Davis, president of the 75,000-member National Union of Hospital and- Nursing Home Employes, said, \Labor can't afford to sit this one out and claim to be a special and political force for progress in the United States.\. That - apparently was _ a reference to the AFL-CIO's decision to endorse neither the McGovern ticket nor the Republican. INA JOURNAL-REGISTER - 11 THURSDAY, JULY 27, 1972 . Baby Lives In Plastic Bubble HOUSTON (UPI)-Since his birth 10 months ago, David has lived inside a sterile plastic bubble. His world of gloved hands and distorted faces is the size of a large playpen. _ Placed outside his artifical nursery David could be dead within a few hours. Even a common cold virus would become his. deadly enemy. His system is unable to 'produce antibodies, substances in the blood that kill or weaken invading bacteria. That defect killed his brother at birth and forwarned doctors who deliv- ° ered David last Sept. 21. The baby, identified only as David at his parents' request, was placed in the bubble five seconds after birth. Wednesday, doctors at Texas Children's Hospital said David is now ready for corrective treatment which may give his otherwise healthy body some immunity against germs. Doctors first will give him a protein extracted from - a normal person's white blood cells. A physician said it may show his immunity system is intact but \that a chemical necessary to activate it is missing.\ . If this fails other options are a thymus gland transplant and then a possible bone marrow operation. This would be the last choice since the baby doesn't have a donor with compatible cells. In the meantime, everything David eats, breathes or touches must be sterilized. His parents must content themselves with holding their baby with plastic gloved hands through portholes on the side. No one has ever touched David's skin. . \The objective was to protect against fatal infections,\ a doctor said. \The bubble has certainly done that.\ «« o = O » w @ a o a we ule e ace wie wos neuer Horden anni n 626202000065 eee ent o 9.0 \eous a Ss _ Man for custodial work ap- prox. three to four hours daily - 4 p.m. to 7 or 8 p.m. , Light work, gbod opportun- ity for able - bodied retired per- son or for working man seeking added income.
