For those who have seen the stage version- Whitmore's brilliant building to hilarious and pointed moments -is affected somewhat on video, but nonetheless it is a memorable hour. Will Rogers wrote his: own material and became a beloved | and world famous humorist with a gift for satirizing the foibles of this nation and jabbing at important people, but doing it without malice. This was not a weakness, but a: basic healthiness of Rogers as a man. It reminds one of the time George Bernard Shaw was asked how he. approached writing. He replied that he tried to think of the utmost thing to say, and then he tried to say it with the utmost. levity. After an ill-advised opening announcement by the sponsor, Falstaff beer, which pompously informs us we are about to watch \a milestone in television history\-for heaven's sake, there are enough television. critics already-Mr. Whitmore comes out on the stage, which has only a desk and a few other props, and tells us briefly about Rogers. Then, .in a bit of theatrical magic, Whitmore casually slips off his sport jacket, takes off his tie, pushes a cowboy hat: onto the back of his head, slips a wad of gum into his mouth and picks up a lariat-and, presto, in what seems like only seconds, we are into the character and the show. Rogers, of Cherokee heritage, was a master at rope-twirling; Whitmore, a fine actor with such movie credits as- \Battfle- ground\ and \The Asphalt Jungle,\ is admirable as he displays this knack also. But it is his delivery of the Rogers lines, with a dazzlingly ingrati- TELEVISION IN REVIEW t I E | | | 9‘ F - _ By RICK DU BROW United Press Intelgnationarl | the grass grows! and the water flows, but when, oil was found the land was grabbed back because there was rothing in the treaty about pil. The question was finally solved, notes Rogers, by giving Indians land where the grass never grows and the water never flows. The audience where the show was taped, the Mark Taper Forum .of the! Los Angeles Music Center, loved Whitmore, with his mixfiure of wit, compassion, raciness and healthy irreverence.
