Nixon's visit to China, the commercial video networks pull out all the stops. On stories like these, they are expected to, and the same goes for historic events such as political assassinations. But there is one enormous area in which the networks do not compare, although they could, with. newspapers and magazines. . And that is the everyday flesh and blood headline stories. This is a frendous gap in network television, and it is one of the main reasons it cannot and will not win intelligent Almanac By.United Press International - Today is Wednesday, Feb. 23, the 54th day of 1972. The moon is between its first quarter and full phase. The morning star is Jupiter. The evening stars are Mercu- ry, Venus, Mars and Saturn. Those born on this day are under the sign of Pisces. German composer George Frederic Handel was born Feb. 23, 1685. .. ___ On this day .in history: In 1847 Gen. Zachary Taylor and U.S. troops defeated Gen. Santa Ana in the Battle of Buena Vista, Mexico. In 1942 a Japanese submarine fired 25 shells at an oil refinery near Santa Barbara, Calif., 2% months after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. . In 1945 six members of the 5th Division of the U.S. Marines planted an American flag atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. In 1969 President Nixon arrived in Belgium to start a tour of Europe. Also in 1969, King Saud of Saudi Arabia died at age 67. Binghamton persons - away - from - their devotion - to - their - favorite newspapers and magazines. Video usually strikes out in prime time when it comes to the events that most of us talk about every day 'and can find covered in newspapers. A few big stories on the home screen can't make up for this. Television, aside from its major stories that it must make space for in prime time, seems to tear off on trends in these key hours. For example, when ecology got hot, the prime time video hours were flooded with documentaries about it, meanwhile it ignores so many other worthy topics that are part of our lives. And then there are the other - subjects that may not exactly be part of our personal lives, but that interest us highly because of their unique nature, and keep us chatting about them-mainly from reading details about them in, newspa- pers.:For example, the Clifford Irving case. Instead/ of doing another - documenta about trial life in Tasmania, or how to save a threaten insects, one might have thought that the commercial networks would be now have put together at least one majoy prime time - special about this fascinating case. * .- They haven't, though-or, rather, none has aired yet, while the case is still hot. And the story. is more exotic than any series on teleivision. The big, big stories are fine on the home screen. But for the full story of what's going on around us each day, in flesh and blood terms, you can't beat a goodnewspaper. ° ~ TEMPERATURES in principal cities: ALBANY, N.Y.
