6 MEDINA JOURNAL-REGISTER WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1972 Rangers Beat Montreal 7-3 At Their Own Game B United Press Internatlonal It took 37 minutes and one second of determined skati but the New York Rangers finally forced Montreal to crack under the pressure-and what followed was one of the most stunning losses the Canadiens ever have suffered before a home crowd. The Canadiens opened up a 3- 0 lead over the Rangers by 8:27 of the first ' period Tuesday night and elected to protect the lead with, a brand of defensive hockey they rarely play. The tactic boomeranged as the Rangers, skating all out, Boxer Dies Injuries in NIPEG, Canada (UPI)- Boxer Stewart Gray died late Tuesday night of head injuries received Monday in a light heavyweight match against Canadian champion Al Sparks. ~- Gray's manager, Irv Unger- man, who also manages George Chuvalo, immediately an- nounced the Chuvalo-Muham- mad Ali heavyweight fight scheduled for March 13 in Vancouver would be postponed indefinitely. Gray, 27, -was knocked unconscious early in the sev- enth round of the Monday night bout. He was rushed to Braves - Edge Bullets BUFFALO, N.Y. (UPT)-Bur- ly Bob Kauffman bolted for a layup after stealing an in- bounds~pass with eight seconds left to give the Buffalo Braves a 99-98 victory over the Balti- more Bullets in an NBA game Tuesday night. Buffalo had battled from eight points behind in the fourth peri- od. to tie the game at 93-all on . Elmore Smith's rebound l ~ with two minutes left, but Bal- 'timore seemed to have it sewed up on Jack Marin's jumper and Archie Clark's free throw with 25 seconds remaining. Kauffman scored on a re- ~ bound with 19 seconds to go and Baltimore called time out to take the ball from mid-court. Kauffman swiped the in-bounds pass cleanly and streaked for the game-winning basket. Clark's last-second 20-footer bounded off the rim and Smith speared the rebound to clinch the victory for Buffalo, which had dropped a one-pointer in the final seconds at Baltimore three weeks ago. ' Kauffman, who missed five minutes in the second period while physicians applied three stitches to close a cut under an eye, led all scorers with 26 points. Walt Hazzard had 19 for the Braves, who missed only one of 20 free throws. Clark with 23 points was high for Baltimore. It was Buffalo's first home-court victory over Baltimore since the Braves joined the NBA last season. Jean Ratelle scored his 44th and 45th goals in the third period to spark the comeback. \We forced the Canadiens to make mistakes in their own end,\\ analyzed New York Coach Emile Francis. \That's one thing about the Rangers- even though we're down by three goals we don't sit on our ~ hands.\ Ratelle sparked the comeback with his 44th at 5:28 of the third period and Brad Park followed with the game-tying of Head Bout Winnipeg General Hospital where he briefly regained con- sciousness. Doctors performed a two-hour operation to relieve brain pressure, but Gray never regained consciousness after the surgery. Gray, a native of Nova Scotia, was the third-ranked light heavyweight in Canada and the second-ranked middle- weight at the time of his death. Upon hearing of Gray's death, Chuvalo, a close friend, said \I won't fight on the 13th. I haven't set any date. I'm just going to think about it for awhile. Ungerman, who also manages Gray's brother, Clyde, said his own future now was uncertain. \Do I try to buck life and reality or do I stay with boxing?\ he said. \I don't know the answer at this time. I know my problem is small when I think of the widow of the boxer. As far as the Ali- Chuvalo fight in Vancouver, it's off indefinitely.\ Sparks was unavailable for comment. Esposito's goal in the second period followed first period scores by Johnny McKenzie, Derek Sanderson and Johnny Bucyk and gave Boston a 4-1 lead. But the stubborn Canucks battled back on goals by where . Jocelyn Guevremont and Dale Tallon before the rally fell short. The victory left the Bruins nine points ahead of the Rangers in the battle for East Division honors. Nick Libett's second goal of the game, at 9:53 of the third period, completed a comeback which saw the Detroit Red Wings rally from a four-goal deficit and beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-4. Goalie Switches Leagues MIAMI (UPI)-Miami's new World Hockey Association (WHA) team,. the Screaming Eagles, are crowing today over the signing of Toronto goalie Bernie Parent of the National Hockey League. However, the Screaming Eagles are acting coy about the details. The spokesman who an- nounced Parent's signing Tues- day said only that an agree- ment had been reached on a multi-year contract Parent, 26, and declined to say how much money was involved. The formal signing has been set for Sunday afternoon. There have been unconfirmed reports the Screaming Eagles had offered Parent $750,000 on a five-year contract to jump from the NHL Maple Leafs. Parent was traded to the Leafs last year by the Philadelphia Flyers. In Toronto, NHL [Players' Association President Alan Eagleson said Tuesday that Parent's defection from the older league could be the signal for many other NHL players to jump to the fledgling WHA. Eagleson estimated that as many as 40 NHL players, including such superstars as | Bobby Hull and Derek Sander- son, were in \serious\ negotia- tions with WHA teams. He said that as 'many as half of this number would go to the WHA if they get the right deal. \The others might use what with > Today} Sport Parade w SPORTS WRITER NEW YORK (UPI)-Al Mc- Guire cuts through all the pollution. He hits you like a breath of fresh air. He has this special little thing going for him. It's called the truth, and with him it seems built-in. He tells the truth no matter what. Now you take the best player he has, for example. You'd better 'make that the best player he had. The kid's name is Jim Chones. He's in his junior year at Marquette University in Milwaukee and you probably noticed where the New York Nets of the ABA signed him for $1.5 million the other day. . This wasn't the usual wallpaper type money you hear of in so many of these basketball deals. Jim Chones - got most of his in hard cold cash. By taking him the way they did, the Nets yanked the very guts out of Al McGuire's team, which has won 22 straight without being beaten and ranks second in the entire nation. He Didn't Holler Some other coach would've hollered bloody murder. Mc- Guire 'didn't holler at all. He had promised he'd help Chones make all the money he could and he stuck to his promise. Some other coach would've told a kid who signed that way he had wrecked the team when he finally got him alone in his private office. Maybe he'd also tell him what a terrible ingrate he was. McGuire didn't do that at all. What he actually said to 6-11, 21-year-old Jim Chones when they were alone was simply this: \I congratulate you, Jimmy. I think you'll have a nice life. Sometime I hope you'll help us with recruiting.\ \Anytime said Jim Chones. There isn't a coach who ever lived who didn't feel that he was different, in some way at least, from all the other coaches. ‘ Al McGuire actually is. For one thing, he takes care of his kids but he doesn't wear that on his sleeve. He takes care of himself, too. He'd be the first to tell: you that. Another thing, he isn't afraid of losing his job. He doesn't have to be. He's so good at what he does the pros are standing in line to hire him. Now it just so happens Al McGuire's own son ; plays basketball for Marquette also. He's 20, he's a junior and everybody calls him \Allie.\ Unlikely Situation Say, for example, Allie McGuire was faced with the same decision Jim Chones had to make. It isn't likely to happen that way because there's a big difference in their abilities, but what would Al McGuire's feeling be if his son, Allie, suddenly came to him and told him he was quitting school to sign with a profession- Nate Thurmond t Is Mellowmg Wl'rh Age (Last of Two Parts.)
