MEDINA JOURNAL-REGISTER iMONDAY, FEBRUARY 2T, 1972 IT’S A TOUGH CAMPAIGN that doesn't allow some relaxation. New York's Mayor John Lindsay on a swing through Florida takes a refreshing pause. There's a nice chunk of change to be made writing. Look what McGraw-Hill paid for some anecdotes about Howard Hughes, a guy who never even playedTriple A bail. The majority of ballplayers say they'd hate to write for a living. They all write though. Once in a while. Especially around this time of year. They write for money. Like so: Dear Jim: _. This is George Washington's birthday so I'm not going to start off by telling you a lie. I didn't have what you'd call a great year. It was good, but not great. I'm sure you find that hard to accept in the face of my .238 batting average and I'd ~ like to say one thing about that. True, it didn't win me any MVP votes but I happen to know of a guy in the Hall of Fame who batted less a 'couple of years. I'm not talking about any pitcher, either. I'm talking about a regular. I looked it up ' and you can check for yourself if you like. The guy's name was Rabbit Maranville. One More Thing _ One more thing about my hitting. It has improved a whole lot since the last time you saw me. Did you see what I hit in the Winter League? Thirty-four points higher than I did last summer. A .272 batting average in the Winter League has to be worth something, doesn't it? I don't think I am being out of line asking for a 75 per cent increase. Have you heard what Vida Blue is asking for? Granted, he had a better year than I did but at least I'm not bringing any lawyer or agent with me. I'm dealing with you right across the table, man-to- man. , I've got all my statistics from last year. Well, maybe not all. There are some I didn't think you'd be very interested in, but if you look at the number of games I was in compared with others around the league I think yog’ll agree I didn't ask out just because. the tough pitchers were going against us. Frankly, I was a little hurt by the last letter you sent me. I'm not only talking about the . contract which was in it and , which. Bby the way, I | returning unsigned, but that part where you answered me - gbout all the appearances I that ['did it for the club. You paid for all the appearances. them for, nothing? Unanswerable Questions You also brushed over the part where I wrote about the number of game-winning hits I got. You ask me to tell you how many times I failed to get the runner home from third with one out or none out and how many times I didn't advance the runner from first or second. Now you know I could never keep statistics like that in my head. Certainly not while I was playing ball, and where could I - possibly get them now? That's not the point anyway. The point is I go out there | and do my best every day and I know a lot of ballplayers who didn't have as good a year as I had and are getting good \raises so why shouldn't I? I . keep reading in the papers valuable cog.\ Also, everything is going up. That includes the bridge toll. It used to cost me 50 cents a day to make the trip to the ball park and back home every day | . last year. Now it's going to cost me $1. You have to take something like that into con- sideration also. | Im Sure you will. Sincerely, Bruce WORKHORSE LITTLE DENVER (UPD Little who was the American Football Conference's leading ground gainer in 1971 carried the bail 283 times from scrimmage, more than any one else in the National Football League.
