Smith at 4 p.m. Sunday (February 20) in the United Methodist Church of Lyn- donville, following his death in Medina Memorial Hospital early Friday morning. Mr. Smith was 87 years old and had lived in Lyndonville for 47 years. He was a pioneer in the development of commercially canned apple sauce, having started his career in Garland, New York, where he originated and developed the plant of the Smithfield Pure Food Company. In 19% he sold his interest in that company and moved to Lyndonville, where he and his brother-in-law, Wilson 'McCagg, assumed fifty-percent ownership of the Lyndonville Canning Company,; Inc., which was originally mcorporated in 1916. -_ Mr. Smith brought with him an apple sauce cooking patent, which included both the method and the type of machine, which was to revolutionize the apple sauce business throughout the country. He was president of the Lyndonville Canning Company for 41 years, during which time he and Mr. McCagg acquired full ownership of the company. Mr. Smith was born June 9, 1884, in Morton. His parents were Walter and Charlotte Smith. In November, 1907, he was united in marmage to Mary Mattlson, who died in April, 1968, and in whose memory he started the fund for the Mary M. Smith Memorial Building, which houses the Yates Community Library in Lyn- donville. i Mr. Smith was a man of many talents and interests, partlcul ry in the field of natural history, being a charter member of the Buffalo Ornithological Sociéty. For many years he studied and photographed wild flowers, trees, and birds. He lectured to garden clubs and to students of natural history. His photographic activites culminated during the past 15 years in the development of an exceptional collection of colored prints of fungi. Smith became well, known for his contributions to their annual photography contests. His prize- winning pictures gained national acclaim through publication in the National Geographic Magazine and, most recently, through an Eastman Kodak display in New York City and Chicago. Perhaps his principal interest was the development of Robin Hill Arboretum, and he was probably known by more people for this than for any other achievement. He corresponded with botanists from all over the United States in the procurement of an exceptional collection of trees and shrubs, now numbering 450 species. At a later date, a private burial service will be held at Sanctuary Park, Robin Hill, Lyndonville. Memorial gifts may be presented to the Yates Community Library for the William A. and Mary M. Smith Memorial Fund, attention of Mrs. William Hyndman III, the librarian; or to the United Methodist Church Memorial J Fund, Lyndonville, attention of | Mrs. Paul Parsons.
